Unit 26

Types of Energy

Anything that has mass and movement has kinetic energy.

The kinetic energy of an object in this case is given by the relation:

KE = (1/2)mv2

m=mass of the object

V=velocity of the object

The greater the mass or velocity of a moving object, the more kinetic energy it has.

Potential energy is the energy stored in a system. It is the energy that can be released to become kinetic or another form.

PE = mgh

 PE = Energy (in Joules)

m = mass (in kilograms)

g = gravitational acceleration of the earth (9.8 m/sec2)

h = height above earth's surface (in meters)

Mechanical energy is also the total amount of kinetic and potential energy

in a system.

Wind-up toys, grandfather clocks, and pogo sticks are examples of

mechanical energy. Wind power uses mechanical energy to help create

electricity.

Potential energy + Kinetic energy =

Mechanical energy

Potential Energy

Gravitational PE mgh

Elastic PEEnergy that is stretched or compressed.

Kinetic Energy The energy of motion

What is Chemical Energy? Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions.

The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy and electromagnetic energy when the match is struck.

Summary of Energy-Part 1

Mechanical Energy• Energy of Motion and Position of

everyday objects.

Electrical Energy• The energy associated with electric

charges.

Chemical Energy• Energy stored in chemical bonds.

Summary of Energy-Part 2

Electromagnetic Energy• Energy that travels through space in the

form of waves.

Nuclear Energy• The energy stored in atomic nuclei

Thermal Energy• Heat Energy.
