Robert Frost

Instruction 1/2

• You are going to read a short biography (8 pages) of a famous American poet—Robert Frost.

• While showing the slides, your teacher won’t do any explaining for you. Each page will stay for 10 seconds only.

Instruction 2/2

• You have to work on the worksheet while reading the slides in order to answer 15 True/False questions based on the slides.

• In the end, we’ll check the answers together and then we can go through the slides and the teacher will explain things you don’t understand.

• Robert Frost was born in San Francisco in 1874. He moved to New England at the age of eleven and became interested in reading and writing poetry during his high school years.

• Never earning a college degree, Frost tried many jobs after leaving school, working as a teacher, editor of a country newspaper, farmer, and so on.

• His life's ambition was to write “a few poems that will be hard to get rid of.” “My Butterfly,” his first professional poem, was published on November 8, 1894, in the New York newspaper The Independent.

• In 1895 Frost got married. His wife, Elinor, became a major inspiration in his poetry. In 1912, he and his wife moved to England and stayed there for three years. There, he was influenced by many British poets.

• With the help from those British poets, he published his first two volumes of poetry—A Boy’s Will and North of Boston. Because of these two collections, his reputation was established and he soon become famous.

• Robert Frost is not only a poet but also a teacher. He taught his students how to write poems. He said, “Good writing grows out of having something to say.”

• “Write about something you know well,” he also said. Most of the poems he wrote are about nature and life in the countryside because those were things he knew well.

• One of America's leading 20th-century poets and a four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Robert Frost died in 1963.

Brother of Ferdy

Who feels sleepy during the day,

Who likes dog food a lot,

Who fears children most,

Who gives trouble to Alice all the time,

Who wants to be a supercat in the future,
