FRIDAY MARCH 23RD
, ARRIVAL & VALLADOLID
The group will be picked up by the tour manager at Madrid Barajas Airport. The pickup time will be set
ten days before departure. The tour manager will accommodate the group and the luggage in the bus to
departure for the city of Valladolid, where you will enjoy a cultural visit trough the most important
monuments of the city.
Valladolid is the capital of Spain's
largest province, Castile-Leon, located
in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula
200 kilometres northwest of Madrid. To
passers-by it may seem nothing more
than a sprawling, modern and heavily
industrialised city. But look a little
closer and you'll find a wealth of
treasures in this former medieval town
where King Ferdinand and Queen
Isabella married in the 15th century
and where Christopher Columbus died,
a broken man, in 1506. Beyond the
modern buildings, factories and hustle
and bustle of city life lie many reminders of a glorious era when Valladolid was the capital of Spain's
powerful empire. The city is rich in ancient churches, museums and monuments and is famous for its
university which was founded in the 13th century and is the second oldest in Spain, after that of
Salamanca. One of Valladolid's major claims to fame is that the people here speak the purest form
of Castilian (the main Spanish language).
To conclude this first day you will be invited to a “welcome dinner” in a typical Spanish restaurant
where you will be able to try one of the best cuisines in the world.
SATURDAY MARCH 24TH
, BREAD NUNS AND MORE
We will leave early in the morning to the village of Mayorga where the bread museum is located. After
visiting the bread museum we will have a lunch at a nun´s monastery. In the afternoon we will go to
the City of Astorga up in the North of Castilla y León. Finally we will get to Ponferrada, an amazing
town full of history and cradle of the temple knights movement in Spain.
SUNDAY MARCH 25th
, EL BIERZO AREA
Talking about el Bierzo is talking about two things: “Prada a Tope” and “Las Medulas”. We will visit Prada
a Tope. This company owned by Jose Luis Prada is an amazing example of the culture of organic
agriculture, not only for wine but also for all kind of products that the Bierzo soil produces. We will be able
to know more about red peppers, cherries, mencía and godello grapes.
After a visit to the property we will move to the little village of Orellan, right in the foothills of Las
Médulas. We will have a roman lunch with chef Isabel in a cozy little family owned restaurant. After lunch
we will visit the biggest gold mine of the Roman Empire! Las Medulas is marvelous landscape over 2000
years old. That is the most important example of how human beings can change nature. After the visit
we will go back to Valladolid.
MONDAY MARCH 26th
, FOIE GRAS
Today the group will be heading Villamartín de Campos. In this little village located in the province of
Palencia is where Selectos de Castilla has its installations. At this place the group will be able to see a
handmade production of foie gras, mi-cuit, confit, pates, duck ham, lamb liver pate and much more…
To conclude the day we will go to Mucientes to enjoy a fantastic dinner at the classroom-museum of
Paco Alba. At this 17th century wine cellar we will have the great opportunity to enjoy a traditional
musical dinner.
TUESDAY MARCH 27th
, SEGOVIA
Today we will be visiting one of the most impressive cities in Spain. We will have lunch at Cándido
restaurant, one of the most popular restaurants in Spain and symbol of the suckling pig. After that, we
will visit the wonderful city of Segovia before visiting a ham factory that exports ham to The US.
Segovia is Spain and Castile at its best - twisting alleyways, the highest concentration of Romanesque
churches in all of Europe, pedestrian streets where no cars are allowed, the aroma of roast suckling pig
around every corner - all surrounded by the city's medieval wall which itself is bordered by two rivers and
an extensive green-belt park with miles of shaded walks. On the north-west extreme of the wall is the
famous Alcázar castle, source of inspiration to Walt Disney, and where Queen Isabel promised
Columbus the financial backing he needed to discover America. On the south-east extreme is the world
renowned Roman Aqueduct, the largest and best preserved of its kind anywhere, which served as the
mintmark on all coins struck in the city from 1455 to 1864. The tallest building in Segovia is still the 16th-
century Cathedral, a prominent landmark as one approaches from any direction. Segovia was as greatly
assisted in 1985 when UNESCO declared Segovia "Heritage of Mankind”.
WEDNESDAY MARCH 28th
, chefs!
We will have the opportunity to visit the International School of Culinary arts and join one of the best
chefs of the region in a demo. Lunch will be an opportunity to enjoy new and old culinary techniques as
well as products.
.
THURSDAY MARCH 29th
, RUEDA
We will start in the morning with a visit to a Castilian cheese producer in the small village of Serrada.
This is a great opportunity to know more about sheep milk cheese at this family business. After the visit
to Serrada we will visit a wonderful winery at Rueda appellation. Yllera winery is a well-known winery in
Rueda that produces sparkling, white, rose and red wines. They owned an underground winery with
different tunnel from the 12 to 14th centuries were they still storage their bottles. After that we will have a
great opportunity to enjoy a traditional musical dinner in a 17th century wine cellar.
