A stable network for application A stable network for application research.research.

UNINETT is the network provider for the academic and research network in Norway. A stable production network. A stable research network for application research

with extra capacity, less than 30% load, to major institutions (about 30).

Backbone STM1 to STM16 in near future.

A separate A separate test bedtest bed for network for network technology researchtechnology research

An IPv6 backbone based on ATM PVPs sponsored by Telenor Net, 10 - 25 Mbps. Will be replaced by STM-1. 4 native IPv6 backbone nodes:

Tromsø (UiTo); Trondheim (NTNU and

UNINETT); Oslo (UiO, NR, Thompson CSF); Kjeller (UNIK, Telenor R&D, FFI).

Areas of InterestAreas of Interest

Promote network research at the institutions IPv6 and Diffserv Deployment

studying practical issues Research

looking for Ipv6/Diffserv benefits to existing work looking for new IPv6-powered solutions

Project activities.Project activities. UNINETT, IPv6 backbone.

To study backbone construction and management UNINETT, Lab.

To study applications and network services.

4 Cisco 4700 router running latest IOS IPv6 Beta based on IOS 12.1.

BGP4+ tunnel peering with 6bone and NTT. Native peering with QTPv6.

Interopability tests.

Initial report delivered

IPv6 Host plattformsIPv6 Host plattforms

IPv6 Solaris 7 and 8 Redhat 6.x FreeBSD 3.4 and 4.0 Windows NT and 2000 Compaq IPv6 stack for Alpha/Tru64 IBM AIX 4.3

IPv6 Router plattformsIPv6 Router plattforms

Telebit TBC2000 Cisco IOS 12.1 FreeBSD 4.0 (KAME stack) Zebra (GNU router project) 3Com Netbuilder II, software v11.3 Hitachi NR60 (Gated)

IPv6 ApplicationsIPv6 Applications

Apache web serve MSIE web browser

plus Mozilla and Lynx Sendmail 8.10 IRC, Mbone tools, INN, ... Quake

IPv6 AddressingIPv6 Addressing

IPv6 addressing scheme-2001:0620::/35 assign to ISP

though it is really a /29 allocation

- registries want only 8K routes in DFZ How to assign to HE Institutions?

- One /48 per site?- Implies 65K networks at (K ites- but "small customer" can get a /48?

IPv6 MultihomingIPv6 Multihoming

Will be more common in IPv6 Host sees Router Advertisements

- auto-configures prefix from each router May have multiple IP addresses

- so may the target host Need to choose src/dst address pair Interfaces may also (dis)appear

IPv6 RenumberingIPv6 Renumbering

Wish to switch ISP- need to use different IP prefix

Router renumbering protocol- in relative infancy- new DNS methods to support it- need to avoid hard-coded IP addresses- may also be used to deprecate a link

IPv6 DNSIPv6 DNS

Running BIND 8.x- DNS lookups IPv4 transport only- IPv6 records are AAAA records

Running BIND 9.0.0. - native IPv6 transport support- A6 and AAAA records for IPv6 DNAME

IPv6 Quality of ServiceIPv6 Quality of Service

20-bit flow label, 8-bit traffic class RSVP

- QoS per connection- e.g. Lancaster media client/server

DiffServ- QoS by packet type/tag- e.g. Thomson IP edge device

Transition/integration toolsTransition/integration tools

Ipv4/IPv6 interwoeking- NAT/PT and Ultima (BT)- Dual stack

easier if you have enough IPv4 addresses- Proxy methods

Also available- DSTM, 6to4, ...

Conclusion - technicalConclusion - technical

Ipv6 core specs are done Host and router support hardening fast

- Microsoft, Cisco and Sun on board Interoperability problems less common Interesting stuff is on the way

- IPv6 Multicast, IPsec, QoS

- IPv6 in wireless applications

Conclusion - operationalConclusion - operational

Address allocation policies important- Multihoming will offer benefits

- Renumbering has potential Auto-configuration is powerful 3GPP may provide the IPv6 kick-start Key IPv6 benefit may be scalability
