Thiscourseintroducesgraduatestudentstobasicideasaboutconductingapersonalresearchprogram.Studentswilllearnbasicmethodsforactivitiessuchasreadingtechnicalpapers,selectingresearchtopics,devising researchquestions, planningresearch,analyzingexperimentalresults,modelingandsimulatingcomputationalphenomena, andsynthesizingbroadertheories.Thecoursewillbestructuredaroundthreeactivities:lecturesonbasicconceptsofresearchstrategyandtechniques,discussionsoftechnicalpapers,andpreparationandreviewofwrittenassignments.Significant reading, reviewing,andwritingwillberequired,andstudentswillbeexpectedtoparticipateactivelyinclassdiscussions.3credits.
