• The sector contributed £149 billion to the economy in 2018 and grew by 8% compared to the previous year

• The goal of the new project is to ensure than any smart device a consumer buys will work in their home regardless of which smartphone or voice assistant their using

• The plans from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), will make sure all consumer smart devices sold in the UK adhere to the three rigorous IoTsecurity requirements
• All consumer internet-connected device passwords must be unique and not resettable to any universal factory setting
• Manufacturers of consumer IoT devices must provide a public point of contact so anyone can report a vulnerability and it will be acted on in a timely manner
• Manufacturers of consumer IoT devices must explicitly state the minimum length of time for which the device will receive security updates at the point of sale, either in store or online

• A new wearable system that alerts workers if they move closer than 2m to each other has been launched
• The bracelet-style device from Lincoln firm Tended is also designed to enable ‘contact tracing’, letting employers see if workers reporting a Covid-19 diagnosis have been in contact with colleagues, and for how long
