Contribution to other programmes • Input into programmes of international organisations

(WHO, OIE, FAO) • Input to existing research projects

• Contributions to larger projects • Preliminary investigations supporting grant applications

• Research contribution example : Arbovirus diagnosis and

epidemiology • Support the involvement of UK expertise • Support development of UK diagnostic capability

What are we looking for? • Projects that support development of capability of overseas

institutes working with infectious agents • Projects with a strong focus on biological safety and security and

adoption of recognised international standards and norms • Projects that demonstrate a clear benefit to requirement of the

international partner • Mentored research initiatives, short term exchanges, export of

specific required skills, development & delivery of training courses, study tours, support to on-going research initiatives

• Other ways to do this?

09 September 2013

Objectives to consider when applying

• Demonstrate knowledge of the situation and set realistic

objectives and milestones

• Proof-of-concept studies • Politics, cultural barriers and security situations may influence

what is achievable – Make appropriate assessments of project risks

09 September 2013

Objectives to consider when applying

• Avoid duplication of effort – Linkage to other funds is encouraged – Utilise niche expertise, articulate unique features of your

input • Sustainability

– What is the long-term outcome of your proposal? Explain how you support the capability and capacity development of the overseas partner

MENA region: specific considerations

• Large region • Security / lack of access - regional approach often most

effective) • Early stage of engagement; lack of clear national/local

requirements and trusted PoC • Diverse cultural and political sensitivities (national and local). • Unequal distribution of wealth (eg requirements in Sudan likely

to differ from Gulf States)
