What are VALVES?
Mechanical devices designed to direct, stop, mix or regulate the flow, pressure
or temperature of a process fluid.
Two basic groups:
Stop valves - used to shut off or partially shut off the flow of fluid( ex: globe, gate, plug, needle, butterfly)
Check Valves - used to permit flow in only one direction (ex: ball-check, swing-check, lift-check)
What are VALVES made of ?
Steel, Iron, Plastic, Brass or any other Special Alloys.
How do we compare VALVES ?
Rangeability:
Ratio of maximum to minimum flow that can be acted upon by the VALVE
after receiving the signal from the controller.
TYPES OF VALVE:-
GATE VALVE
SOCURE VALVE
SAFTY VALVE
NEEDLE VALVE
AIR VALVE
CHECK VALVE
LATITUDE VALVE
BUTTERFLY VALVE
MUD VALVE
GLOBE & ANGLE VALVE
AIR VALVE :-
There are three basic types of air release valves:-
˃ Kinetic Air Release valves
˃ Automatic Air Release valves
˃ Combination Air Release valves
Kinetic Air Release Valves with Large Orifice :-
This type of valve is used to release air at high flow rates during the filling of the line
and to allow air to enter the line at high flow rates during its emptying.
The Kinetic Air Release valve will function when the line is not under pressure. It is
designed so that when the line is under pressure (water flowing) the valve will stay
closed.
Automatic Air Release Valves with Small Orifice :-
This type of valve is used to release air during water flow, while the system is under
pressure. When air bubbles appear in the valve, the ball will drop, causing air to be
released. When the water rises again, the ball will be lifted, causing the valve to close.
Combination Air Release Valve :-
This type of valve incorporates an automatic and kinetic air release valve into one unit.
CHECK VALVE :-
Controls direction of flow
Operated by flow of fluid in pipe
Types:
Swing check - disc moves through an arc
Lift check - disc moves up and down
Ball check - ball is located at end of stem and lifts to allow flow
BUTTERFLY VALVE :-
Butterfly valves is a quarter turn rotatory motion
Valve that uses rotating round disk as a regulating Element.
Used widely in water treatment plant since large pipes are used
Used in water, fuel, and ventilation systems
Size : - 2 in- 8 in
Advantage: - small, light-weight, & quick-acting
Disadvantage :- leaks early & only low-flow throttle
MUD VALVE :-
Mud Valves are designed for use in draining large volumes of fluids by means of
static head pressure.
They are particularly useful in reservoirs, and in tanks of water and wastewater
treatment plants, for normal operations, and when draining is required for
maintenance or cleaning.
GLOBE & ANGLE VALVES :-
Most common, Rising stem control valves
Design simplicity, versatility of applications, easy
maintenance & ability to handle a wide temperature
and pressure range
Most widely used valve in Ammonia plant
Has a cage to regulate flow
Size < 0.5-42 inches >
