Can you hear me now? Turning an idea into impact

Presented by DeRon L. Talley, LSBDC Communications Specialist

Points of Interest

• I’m no different than you, but here’s what was:– I acted without permission first– Brought evidence to the table– Timing was impeccable– Owned it– Blueprinted it– My baby is born and growing!

No permission, who cares?

• An idea without action is just a dream!–Get a “Let’s do it” attitude

• We work with a lot of talented and experienced people, however complacency kills creativity.

– It’s not just about having an idea, it’s about being crazy enough to do it!

Be able to show and tell

• Shared my raw success– We work in a place driven

by data, so give them data!

• Be a salesperson for your idea!– Create a strategy of how

you did what you did and say “we can too”

Timing was impeccable

• My idea was on the radar– Get ahead of the curb

internally• Hear your center’s needs

and desires– Know what’s “hot and

trendy” nationally • Create success around it

It’s yours – own it!

• You’ve already done something, it worked, you have what they are interested in (roughly) and you’re in season. Now make it work!

• You’ve brought something to the table that only you can manifest – now you have professional value!

Blueprint – duplicate and share

• Develop your strategy and duplicate success– Explain the purpose– Show the value– Make it easy to repeat

I’m a proud parent! My baby was born and is growing

• #SBDCMillennialMeetup welcomed 30 to an informal, impromptu hangout

• #NelaMills engaged over 100 people with nearly 40 in physical attendance and the others engaged online

• #M3 welcomed over 60 SBDC folks in a first-time event to start the discussion

A Quick Bonus!

– Create a connector– Develop Subject Matter– Assign Roles– Schedule date and pick

venue

– Market to millennials– Measure results and aim to

duplicate and grow!
