Tulips became popular in the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) in the 16C and were imported into Europe through Holland.

By the early 17C, tulip became very popular. New varieties were developed and bulbs were bought and sold by speculators. At it height a bulb could worth as much as a house. Eventual the bubble went burst but the love affair with tulip continued. The painting above shows some of the earlier varieties.

Today, Holland is still known for its tulips and cultivated as corps.
