LUKE 1:2645 (NIV)26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel
to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin
pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,
a descendant o David. The virgins name was
Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said,Greetings, you who are highly avored! The
Lord is with you. 29 Mary was greatly troubled
at his words and wondered what kind o greeting
this might be. 30 But the angel said to her,
Do not be araid, Mary, you have ound avor
with God.31
You will be with child and give birthto a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.32 He will be great and will be called the Son o
the Most High. The Lord God will give him the
throne o his ather David, 33 and he will reign
over the house o Jacob orever; his kingdom will
never end. 34 How will this be, Mary asked
the angel, since I am a virgin? 35 The angel
answered, The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power o the Most High will overshadow
you. So the holy one to be born will be called
the Son o God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is
going to have a child in her old age, and she who
was said to be barren is in her sixth month.37 For nothing is impossible with God. 38 I am
the Lords servant, Mary answered. May it be
to me as you have said. Then the angel let her.39At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a
town in the hill country o Judea, 40where she
entered Zechariahs home and greeted Elizabeth.41When Elizabeth heard Marys greeting, the
baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was

until I tell you; or Herod is about to search or
the child, to destroy him. 14 Then Joseph got
up, took the child and his mother by night, and
went to Egypt, 15 and remained there until the
death of Herod. This was to fulll what had been
spoken by the Lord through the prophet, Out o
Egypt I have called my son. 16When Herod sawthat he had been tricked by the wise men, he was
inuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in
and around Bethlehem who were two years old or
under, according to the time that he had learned
rom the wise men. 17 Then was fullled what had
been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:18
A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud
lamentation, Rachel weeping or her children;
she reused to be consoled, because they are no
more. 19When Herod died, an angel o the Lord
suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
and said, 20 Get up, take the child and his mother,
and go to the land o Israel, or those who were
seeking the childs lie are dead. 21 Then Joseph
got up, took the child and his mother, and went
to the land o Israel. 22 But when he heard that
Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place o his
ather Herod, he was araid to go there. And ater
being warned in a dream, he went away to thedistrict o Galilee. 23 There he made his home in
a town called Nazareth, so that what had been
spoken through the prophets might be fullled,
He will be called a Nazorean.
who has been born king of the Jews? For we
observed his star at its rising, and have come to
pay him homage. 3When King Herod heard this,
he was rightened, and all Jerusalem with him;4 and calling together all the chie priests and
scribes o the people, he inquired o them where
the Messiah was to be born. 5 They told him,In Bethlehem o Judea; or so it has been written
by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land
o Judah, are by no means least among the rulers
o Judah; or rom you shall come a ruler who is
to shepherd my people Israel. 7 Then Herod
secretly called or the wise men and learned romthem the exact time when the star had appeared.8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go
and search diligently or the child; and when you
have ound him, bring me word so that I may also
go and pay him homage. 9When they had heard
the king, they set out; and there, ahead o them,
went the star that they had seen at its rising, until
it stopped over the place where the child was. 10
When they saw that the star had stopped, they
were overwhelmed with joy.11 On entering the house, they saw the child with
Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid
him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they oered him gits o gold, rankincense, and
myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream
not to return to Herod, they let or their own
country by another road. 13 Now after they had
let, an angel o the Lord appeared to Joseph in
a dream and said, Get up, take the child andhis mother, and fee to Egypt, and remain there

WITNESS FOR JUSTICECONVeNIeNT memORy LOSS
by M. Linda Jaramillo, Executive Minister
Ihear story ater story about communities
across the country being torn apart by
erce debates over immigration. I readspeech ater speech delivered by political
leaders adding infammatory remarks to an
already hostile social environment. In all the
ear-producing outcries, immigrants are named as
the problem with America. One such place is the
State o Oklahoma. What mysties me about all this is our
apparent memory loss. I am conused by our
patriotic cries that raise the American fag
and the Statue o Liberty as the icons o our
culture. Yet, we seem to have orgotten that the
thirteen stripes on the fag represent the original
colonies made up o rebellious and courageous
immigrants coming to this land to make a better
lie. We have orgotten that the Statue o Liberty
is called a symbol o reedom and opportunity,
inscribed with these words, Give me your tired,
your poor, your huddled masses yearning to
breathe ree We have orgotten that most o
the American West was Mexico not very long
ago. Most alarming is that we ignore that this
land rst belonged to Indigenous peoples who
have been set aside.
This memory loss reminds me o my history
lessons in public schools over a hal-centuryago. As an eighth grader, I was required to
take Colorado History. The problem with the
Colorado History class was that the textbooks
left out signicant information about the realhistory. Never did I see people in those books
who looked like me, even though my ancestors
had been on the land or centuries beore the
United States expanded and created states like
Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Oregon,
Washington, Idaho, California, New Mexico andOklahoma. The school books only told stories
about those who traveled west on wagon trains
courageous and rebellious immigrants in search
o a better lie. It seems that the authors o the
history textbooks had lost their memory too.
Now, our memory loss is showing up in
hateul state legislation that strips peoples
dignity and their basic human rights. Oklahoma
House Bill 1804, enacted November 1, 2007,
is based on assumptions that have no proven
oundation. Legislators and the Governor
endorsed a bill that blames illegal immigrants
or the economic woes and lawlessness in the
state. Where is the data that proves that illegal
immigrants are committing crime at a higher
rate? Where is the data that veries that illegal
immigrants are draining public resources?
This bill is not about data, it is about a loss o
memory that has rendered people invisible in thehistory books and in todays stories.

WORKING FAMILY VALUESNO-beNefIT jObS LeAVe PAReNTS STRuggLINg
pAsTOrs pAge
by Heather Boushey
When we send our children out into
the world o work, we assume that
i they can get their oot in the
door and get a job, then they can
move up the ladder and take care o themselves and
their amilies. The job may not be perect, but they
will be able to make ends meet and have time to be
both good workers and good parents.
The reality, however, is that millions o jobs
in the United States are not these kinds o jobs.
Nationwide, about one-third of jobs are low wage,
paying less than two-thirds o the male median
wage, and, more oten than not, dont come with
health insurance, paid time o, or retirement plans.
Many workers in low-wage jobs do not even knowwhat their work schedule is or next week, let alone
what theyll do i they need a sick day.
Low-wage workers and their amilies are oten
excluded rom what most o us would consider
normal activities, such as taking a paid sick day
i their child is sick. This is a moral outrage. In
a nation where the majority o children do not
have a stay-at-home parent, how should amilies
cope when a child gets the fu? Leave the child at
daycare and get all the other children sick? Risk
their jobs by missing a day o work? Every day in
the worlds richest nation, parents are orced to
choose between being a good parent and being at
their job.
One o the key characteristics o low-wage jobs
is that they arent subject to the same kinds o ba-
sic labor standards as other jobs. High-wage jobs
often provide the kinds of benets that workers
with amilies need, such as the fexibility to take an
hour to take the children to the dentist and then
make it up later, or paid time o or maternity and
paternity leave. But those in low-wage jobs, who
are also in need o amily-riendly policies, simply
dont get these kinds o perks.
PUBLIC BENEFITS, such as Medicaid and
child care subsidies, are supposed to ll the gap for
workers who do not get on-the-job benets. Yet
we nd that in states across the country, not only
do benets phase out long before youre likely to
get employer-based benets, but few (often less
than half) of those eligible actually receive benets. Most work support programs, including child
care subsidies and Medicaid, ocus on the poor-
est among us or those without employment. This
leaves millions o working amilieswho are not
what the government would dene as poor, but
who dont earn enough to meet their basic needs
and dont get on-the-job benetsstruggling to
make ends meet.
We need to think long and hard about what
kind o economy we want to create or the next
generation o workers. What are the basic stan-
dards that should be common to all jobs, not just
the best jobs? At the very least, the United States
should ollow the lead o other advanced

economies and provide paid time o or workers
who are ill, have an ill amily member, or need
time to care or a new child. We should also en-
sure that sae, aordable, and enriching child care
is available to every parent. We need to incorpo-
rate into our policymaking the recognition that
those working in low-wage jobs may be unable to
make ends meet and that their employers are not
lling in the gaps with benets.
Its not just the very poor who need our atten-
tion. As members o the middle class have been
squeezed, more and more o us are struggling to
maintain our standard of living. The past 30 years
have brought rising wage and income inequality
and an increase in the low-wage, no-benet jobs.
I we want to see an economy that works or
everyone, then weand our representatives in
Washingtonmust work or labor standards thatsupport all workers.

fAmILy VALueS, contdmemORy LOSS, contdWhat is even more ridiculous is that the
State o Oklahoma claims that this law will be
enorced without discrimination. It reads, The
provisions o this section shall be enorced
without regard to race, religion, gender,
ethnicity, or national origin. Lets not kid
ourselves: this law is all about discrimination.
Oklahoma is but an example o bigoted public
policies being considered in many statehouse in
this nation.
Hispanic Oklahomans are leaving the state
in droves out o ear. Many o them are not
recent immigrants; they have been there or
generations. Native Americans in Oklahoma are
being mistaken or Hispanics and targeted or
deportation.
Last weeks celebration o Thanksgiving is
based on an historic event in this nation. But aswe celebrated, we seemed to have orgotten the
truth about our history. Weve had a convenient
loss o memory.
The United Church o Christ has more than 5,700
churches throughout the United States. Rootedin the Christian traditions o congregational
governance and covenantal relationships, each
UCC setting speaks only or itsel and not on
behal o every UCC congregation. UCC members
and churches are ree to dier on important
social issues, even as the UCC remains principally
committed to unity in the midst o our diversity.

When we hear the admonition to Put Christ in our Christmas, it oten seems like one
more thing we are being asked to do, another should. The rst Christmas, however,
was a git. Mary and Joseph, shepherds and magi, received something very special. I we
are to savor the moments o Advent and Christmas, perhaps it would be well to connect the word,
savor with savior, remembering their true meanings.
The word, savor, has the core idea o tasting, experiencing a particular favor or smell, recogniz-
ing a distinctive quality. I we savor something, we take time to relish it and enjoy it. Savoring the
Advent moments involves sensing the joy o its central message all along the way.
The word, savior, involves not only what we are saved rom, but what we are saved to. Salvation
moves us rom aloneness or rejection to belonging and being accepted. It is a git o love that comes
rom the Savior, o whom we sing in this season, Christ, the Savior, is Born! We are given a great
git. We belong, and, knowing this is true as Advent moves along, we can anticipate that God does
have good things in store or us.
The result o this can be a sense o givenness that can permeate our living. Lie is something more
than the day to day struggle to get by. Jesus promised us an abundant lie. Part o the secret o that
lie is living in the given-ness spirit, both in what we give and what is given to us.
What a blessing this is, when it comes in a world where oten it seems as though people are alwaysasking things o us, oten expecting more than we can give. With aithul, caring concern, we try to
fulll our responsibilities and be helpful to those around us, but often we are misunderstood and feel
we have no more to give. Jesus comes to say that God always stands with us, hand on our shoulder,
giving us support and strength.

Every ve years, Congress reauthorizes the
Farm Bill. This legislation has tentacles that
reach ar and wide with regard to many
of the policies under which we live. The Farm
Bill hits everything rom energy to conservation;
rom compensation or armers to the ood stamp
program.
As the program currently exists, large cash
payments are made to large corporate armers,
while the small armers are being let out in
the cold. Rural amilies o modest means are
being orced to close down or relinquish their
arms, which have sometimes been in amilies or
generations, to large corporate arms. This bottompricing, and corporate reward is nothing but a
continuation o the Wal-Martization o America.
Furthermore, a reform in the Farm Bill would
allow or proper compensation o black armers
who were discriminated against by the USDA
in 1999, when that agency refused to provide
technical assistance, the results o which causedmany bankruptcies and farm foreclosures. In 1999,
a settlement of nearly $1 billion was paid to nearly
15,000 families. However, over 63,000 black
farmers eligible for the $50,000 claim given to
each amily, were let out in the cold.
Moreover, the ood stamp program, which
purports to be the rst line of defense against hungerin America, needs to be expanded in order to make
more amilies eligible in order to eliminate hunger.
Only a reorm in the arm bill will allow some
o these policies to be altered, in order to be more
equitable or those suering under this policy.
Thereore, I urge you to call your Senator and
demand that the Farm Bill include the following
amendments:
Lugar/Lautenberg Amendment: Would broaden
the agricultural saety net by making a ree
revenue insurance program available to all armers,
saving billions o dollars to be used or nutrition,
conservation, the McGovern-Dole international
school meals program and more.
Grassley/Dorgan Amendment: Would cap
commodity payments at $250,000 per household, helping to ensure that payments are targeted to
those who need them.
Brown/Sununu Amendment: Would reorm crop
insurance programs to bring the insurance companies
underwriting gains more in line with other types o
insurance and lower their Administration &
Operations (A&O) reimbursement. No farmerswould see any change in their premium costs or
coverage. It would save money to reinvest in ood
stamps, conservation, and McGovern-Dole
international school eeding program.
Menendez Amendment: Would make a small
cut to Direct Payments and reinvest the savings in
ood stamps and conservation.
Amendments which would allow black armers tobe compensation or discrimination suered at the
hands of the USDA from the 1997 Pigordcase.
Other amendments that add unding to
nutrition programs: Several other amendments
will likely be oered to increase unding or the ood
stamp program and other vital nutrition programs.

during the Christmas season?
We smile and oer goodwill to all people. We give to others gladly and
experience the warm eeling that comes with giving rom the heart, in
order to please those we love.
But why should this eeling be limited to Christmas? The season
recalls the birth o our Lord, true; but Christ is with us always. He
did not appear two thousand years ago and then disappear. Christ is
present today, every day, and He watches to see if we will fulll His
commandment o love, His wish that we give o ourselves to others, as
a sign that we want to give o ourselves to Him.
Let us all join in during this Holy Season and continue during the
coming year to show our love and generosity.
