THIRD SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY SERVICE OF THE WORD
9:00 AM JANUARY 26, 2020
THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WELCOMES ALL! We are gathered in the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ who beckons us to come to Him in faith and
repentance. May the gospel of the Lord inspire and fill you with the Spirit!
Fellowship & refreshments are available in the Library immediately
following our Annual Meeting.
GATHERING
WE PREPARE: Jesus begins his public ministry by calling fishers to leave their nets and follow
him. In Jesus the kingdom of God has come near. We who have walked in darkness have seen a
great light. We see this light most profoundly in the cross—as God suffers with us and all who
are oppressed by sickness, sin, or evil. Light dawns for us as we gather around the word, the
font, and the holy table. We are then sent to share the good news that others may be “caught”
in the net of God’s grace and mercy.
PRELUDE/ PARISH NOTICES/ RINGING OF THE BELL
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our
sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our
sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and
Lord. Amen.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Silence is kept for reflection.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have
left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our
neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.
Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in
your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God
forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his
authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the
Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

GATHERING SONG I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light ELW#815
GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy
Spirit be with you all. And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord God, your lovingkindness always goes before us and follows after us. Summon us
into your light, and direct our steps in the ways of goodness that come through the cross
of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

WORD
FIRST READING Isaiah 9:1-4
The first reading is in Isaiah chapter 9, verses 1-4. The northern tribes of Zebulun and
Naphtali experienced defeat, but they are assured that their condition will be reversed
when God makes a light-filled appearance. The joy they will experience will resemble
celebrations of great harvests, because God will deliver them from everything that
diminishes or oppresses them. The people in the northern parts of Israel have
experienced "gloom" and "darkness" because of the destruction wrought by Assyrian
military forces. To these people, the prophet announces the shining of a great light of
salvation.
But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into
contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make
glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness — on them light has shined.
You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder.
For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 1:10-18
The second reading is in 1 Corinthians chapter 1, verses 10-18. Paul calls on the
Corinthians to end their dissensions and share the unified outlook of the gospel. Discord
arises when we forget that we belong not to human leaders or institutions but to Christ
who was crucified for us. Indeed, the unifying word of the cross of Christ is the center of
the gospel and the power of God's salvation.
Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you
be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same
mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there are
quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, "I belong to
Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Has Christ
been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank
God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were
baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not
know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim
the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its
power.
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are
being saved it is the power of God.
The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION I LOVE TO TELL THE STORY
GOSPEL Matthew 4:12-23
The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 4th chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth
and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that
what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
"Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles — the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."
From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."
As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and
Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea — for they were fishermen. And he said to them,
"Follow me, and I will make you fish for people." Immediately they left their nets and followed
him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother
John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.
Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.
Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of
the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the
power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
SENDING BLESSING
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord's face shine on you with grace and mercy.

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK
“Come. Follow me,” Jesus said. “I will make you fishers of people.” Matthew 4:19
SAY, PRAY AND BLESS: A Prayer for the Week:
Lord Jesus, thank you for choosing us to follow you. Teach us how to fish for people. Amen. (Matthew 4:19)
Mealtime Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for the drinks we sip and the food we swallow. Please give us strength to serve and faith to follow. Amen.
A Blessing to Give:
May Jesus give you a heart that seeks him and feet that are ready to follow him. Amen. (Matthew 4:18-20; Psalm 27:8)
CARING CONVERSATION Discuss in your household or small group:
• Share about a time when there was a big change in your life.
• When Jesus called Andrew, Simon, James and John to follow him, they immediately left their work as fishermen to follow him
(Matthew 4:18, 21). Why do you think they did this? How do you think they felt?
• In what ways has following Jesus changed your life?
DEVOTIONS Set up a collection of tea candles on a table or a bench in your home. During your devotion times this week, read Matthew 4:16. Invite
each person to share ways in which they have experienced Jesus as their “great light” during the day or week. Each time, light a
candle and say these words: “Jesus our light, thank you for shining on us.”
SERVICE In Psalm 27, we hear King David expressing his heartfelt desire to worship God in the temple all the days of his life (Psalm 27:4). The
way we care for our places of worship reflects our appreciation for God and for the gifts he gives us in worship. Commit as a household
to an act of service to improve the state of your church facility (e.g. gardening, window cleaning, painting, etc.). Make arrangements to
do this.
RITUALS AND TRADITIONS Jesus calls all his followers to “fish for people.” One way we do so is through prayer—by praying for specific people that don’t as yet
know Jesus, and for specific missionaries and mission activities. Hang a string or a cord between two points in your home and attach
small hooks to it. Cut out paper fish shapes and write the name of a person or mission for whom your household can pray on each one.
Attach the “fish” to the hooks and use your “fishing line” as a visible reminder to pray.

This Week’s Prayer Concerns
Pray in this season of Epiphany…that Jesus would
come and light up our hearts as we prepare for his
coming by serving our neighbors in need…
Pray for the Church…that the Holy Spirit would
empower us to live in the image of God so that we would
speak and act in every way bringing glory to God before
all the nations and peoples with what we have been
given…
Pray for the nations…that the darkness, which has
penetrated so many lives that your light Lord would help
us to see the presence and that the Spirit would leads us
to seek the truth and practice grace with those who are
hurting and searching for answers…
Pray for the victims of natural disasters…that those who
are able would offer aid in the midst of chaos would be
plentiful; especially those fighting the fires in our world,
that God’s love would be made known through those
willing to shoulder the burdens of suffering so that hope
and peace would comfort those who are in need…
Pray for all who are ill, afflicted, or recovering…that the
Holy Spirit would give comfort and daily strength to Ed
& Cathy Blackstad; Lynette Carlson; Daniel Luong; Joan Miller; Neil Neidt; Greg Nessett; Barb Ladd;
Irene Schmitt; Linda Strand; Marian Thiessen; Joyce
Wolling; and all who are near us in need, including
Robyn Anderson (Bishop Jon’s wife); Beth
Chapdelaine (Terry Newgord’s sister); Nicole Steffl
Fuchs (Cindy Steffl’s daughter); David Haala; Connor
Hanson (Jim & Jackie Hutchin’s nephew); Sue

Hurley’s brother); Kathy Ogelsby; Kimora Okins
(Trudy Schroeder’s/Alda Rydin’s great grand-daughter);
and Mary Jo Staite (Darlene Brummund’s cousin).
Pray for the beloved… who now rest from their labors in
God’s mercy and for all who mourn the personal
loss of loved ones, especially Cathy Blackstad and her
family as they mourn the loss of her husband, Edward
Blackstad, and Karen Voge and her family as they
mourn the loss of Russ Voge….that God would fill each
one with the hope of our Lord’s promise to bring us to a
new heaven and earth where suffering, crying, pain and
death will be no more.…
Pray for those traveling…that the Holy Spirit would
protect them as they go on their journeys and bring them
safely back home…
Pray for those in prison…that the Holy Spirit would
guide their hearts to return to the Lord in faith, and bring
them opportunities to grow and become contributing
members of society…
Pray for all families…that the Holy Spirit would bring
compassion and mercy to all who are separated from one
another and each would give way to mercy, love and
reconciliation…
Pray for those preparing for marriage and those newly
married...that God would be glorified in their union,
filling every couple with the light and truth of God’s
grace and power throughout their lives …
Pray for the men and women serving in the Armed
Forces and those far from home…for Brady Augustin
and his wife (Donna Augustin’s son stationed in
Syria)…and for all of our military Veterans that the Holy
Spirit would guard them in safety and keep their hearts
stayed in Christ…
Pray for the missionaries of our church (ELCA)…that
the Holy Spirit would bless their lives and their work as
they proclaim their witness of the Gospel throughout the
world…
