becauseeveryonecandothisalso.We'rejustnottaught.It'sindependentofage,regardlessofhebackground,theircareer,theirlevelofeducation,theirIQ,theirgender;everyonehasthispotential,it'sjustweweren'ttaughthowtodothis.Iknowthisbecause,ifanything,Ithinkwe'retaughtalie.Alikethatsomehowourlearningorourmemoryisfixed,likeourshoesize,andit'sabsolutelynottrue,becauseweknowthroughagrowthmindsetwhichispartofwhatIwanttotalkaboutinthisconversationabouthowpeoplecangettothatsuper-leveloflearning,tolearnanysubjectorskillfaster,tobeabletorememberthingsthattheyreallyneedtobeabletodo.
Iactuallygrewupwithlearningchallenges,andIknowyouknowthisbutalotofpeopledon'tknow,whenIwasinkindergartenIhadaverybadaccident,Ihadabraininjury.Itleftmewiththislearningproblems,andIhadalotoftroublefocusinggrowingup,Ihadalotofproblems.Maybepeoplecouldrelatetonotunderstandingthingsaswellaseveryoneelse.Ihadabigchallengeofrememberingthings,itactuallytookmeanextracoupleofyearsjusttoevenlearnhowtoread.Istruggledallthoughtelementaryschool,tomiddleschool,tojuniorhigh,eventhroughhighschool.Iknowwhatit'sliketoreallysufferandtobechallenged.
WhenIgottocollegeIwantedtostartfresh,youknowhoweveryonewantsacleansheet,beabletohammockafreshstart;Iwantedtostartfresh,ItookalltheseclassesandIactuallydidworse,reallybad.ItgottothepointwhereIwasreadytoquit,freshmanyearinschool.Atthattime,we,myfriend,said"Whydon'twetakeabreak?Takesomeperspective.I'mgoingtogohome,I'mgoingtoseemyfamily.Whydon'tyoutaketheweekendtogotoCaliforniaandIendedupgoingonthistripwithhim.Thefamilyisverywealthy,Idon'tjustmeanfinancialtreasures,Imeantheywerejustveryhappy,theyweremakingimpact,andgreatrelationships.

worktodo."Thenwhathedidwashepulledoutmybucketlist,whichhestillhad,verysmartman,andhestartsreadingoutloudallmygoals,allmydreams,allmydesiresandallmyfantasiesoutloud.There'ssomethingabouthearinganotherpersonthatyoujustmet,that'sobviouslyverysuccessful,enchantingouttotheuniverse,sayingoutloudintheuniverse,hearingyourowngoalsinlife,thethingsthatyou'remostexcitedabout.
Honestly,alotofthethingsonthere,Dave,werethingsIwantedtodoformyfamily,thingsthattheycan'tneverbeabletoaffordormaybedoforthemselves.Withthatextraleverageandmotivation,whichisverykeyasyouknowtogrowthandtolearning,Iagreedtoreadonebookaweek,ontopofmyschoolwork,onebookaweek.

Istartedstudyingadultlearningtheory,neurosciences,allthisstuff.Then,allofasudden,aboutthirty,sixtydaysintoit,alightbulbjustgoesonandIjuststartedtounderstandthings.Imean,reallyunderstandthings.Istartedtohavebetterfocus,Istartedtonotonlycomprehendsomethingbut,Iswear,torememberitalso.Somygradesstartedtosear,butasmygradesstartedtosoar,mylifestartedtosoaralso.Ifixedthisarea,thenallofasuddenmyrelationshipsgotbetter,mybodystartedtogetbetter,everything,onceIlearnedhowmybrainworks.Afterthat,Icouldn'thelpbutshareitwithotherpeople.OneofmyveryfirststudentsIstartedtutoring,shewasafreshman;thisisamazing,you'lllovethis.

supposedtosomehowjusthappen,likeI'lljusttryharder;that'sgrit,butgritwithouttechniqueit'sjustlikeself-flagellationatacertainpoint.Iguessthat'stweet-able.Ijustkindofmadethatup,butIlookatallthatcrapIusedtodotomyselfbecausethat'swhat'ssupposedtowork,soitwasjustthatsinceredesiretonotdostuffthatdoesn'twork,sothatyouhavecontrol.WhenyougotthebodyworkingIfoundthemindstuffwasaloteasier.Iusedtohaveallthisbrainfog,itwasscary,disabilityinsurancescary.WhereI'dlikeboughtdisabilityinsurancebecauseIwouldn'thireme,becausehalftimemybraindoesn'tworkyettherearetimeswhenIcansnapoutofthefog,learnwhateverIneedtoinahalfhouroverdinnerandteachfor3hours,andgohome.ThenI'mlike"WhatdidIjustdo?"Theveryabilitywasreallyscary.Tobeabletogetthebiologythere,sothenmybrainwoulddoit,whatitwascapableofdoing,itwasn'taneasytask.IfoundthatwhenIstarted,atthetop,workingonmymemory,eventakingsmartdrugs,itwasthefirstthingIdid,insteadofthelastthingIdid,whichistherightorder,thatitdoesn'tworkthatwellifyourmitochondrialenergyisn'tthere,ifyourhormonesarebroken,ifyoucan'tmakeenergybecauseyourbloodsugarisallovertheplace,becauseyoudon'thaveenoughfat.Allthosethings,Ijustwishedsomeonewould'vetoldmethat,orevenworse,yourbiologyiskindofworkingbutthenyoudostuffthat'stoxictoyoursystem,evenifit'snottoxicforyourfriend.What'smystate?Yourstateiscrap,andyouprobablyhaven'tevenfelttherealstateofhighperformance.
