BIBLE RECORD OF THE TARPLEY OLDHAM FAMILY: The Bible is owned byJames Thompson, Route 1, Knob Lick, Ky,
Contributed by Mrs Argyle Faith;The following information was given: The Bible from which this
record was copied belonged to Tarpley Oldham (1765-1837) who wasborn in Virginia and came to Bourbon Co., Ky. at an early date. Helater moved to Barren Co., Ky,, near Knob Lick, Ky. (now MetcalfeCo.) and is buried in that area. Mrs. Fadth has a copy of TarpleyOldham's Will, and also a copy of the Will of his sister, ElizabethOldham (1763-1836).
Tarpley Oldham married Polly (?) ca 1790 and they had 10 children before her death in 1812. His 2nd wife was Amy (Shockley) Ball,widow of John Ball whom she had married Dec 22, 1800 in Franklin Co,Va., and they had four sons.

The four page letter found in the Tarpley Oldham Bible was writt-® by^the son, James Tapley Oldham, to relatives living in Barren Co.,Ky. It was dated Jan 3, 1849, and place of residence given as SpiceWoods, Daviess Co., Ky. (nov/ McLean) Evidently, there was no PostOffice there as he says, "When eny of you rite to me direct your let-ers to Croos Pond as it is nearer than Calhoun, People say this pondgot its name two negroes drownded their master (A Mr, Crow) and hidhxm 2.n it," , Remarks re; the new invironmcijl: - "I loust say we areall very well pleased so fare, I believe this to be the best poorwans Country I evr saw or perhaps heerd of the land is good, the wateris good, the timber is good and I beleave the helth as good or beterthan it is in old Barren. David Edwards says v;ith 500 dollars he cancet land heare that he wld not give fore 5 such places and I beleavehe is half right. Prices high heare coffee is worth 15 cts and shugaris 13 pounds to the dollar, tobacco is 8 dollars prised and I am toldthare was some sold over the other side of Green river for 9.75 thareis a greate stire abought another crop ... I beleave the peopl isrearer square with the world than eny place I ever sav/ they pay asthey go in a greate degrey and it is a good place for selling goodrs .. . the Croos land that you was hunting lies right he:^r aiid is veryvaluable."
