Various laws require that pesticideapplicators be educated about thesafe application of chemicals, andthat they follow precisely the labeldirections for all products theyuse. Those who apply chemicalsto crops near aquaculture facilitiesshould be aware of the potentialrisks of contaminating those facili-ties. Aquatic organisms may dieas a result of pesticide contamina-tion, or they may simply growpoorly, become more susceptibleto disease, or become unsuitablefor human consumption.
The sublethal effects of many agri-cultural chemicals on aquatic lifeare unknown. Any misused chem-ical can cause serious problems toan aquaculture operation. On theother hand, even the most toxicchemical can be used safely if it isused properly.
With careful management it ispossible to protect crops frominsects, weeds and diseases while
at the same time preventing pesti-cides from harming aquaculturaloperations. Near aquaculture,grow crops that require little or nopest control. Scout fields for pestsand use chemicals only when nec-essary. When a pesticide must beused, select a product that is regis-tered for the use intended and isthe least toxic and least persistentof the products available. Alwaysfollow exactly the directions onthe label.
Reduce the risk of pesticide driftby:
� using low-volatility formula-tions;
� using low pressure;
� using high volume;
� using the largest nozzle that ispractical;
� releasing spray near the crop orsoil surface;
� not spraying when the temper-ature is high;
� spraying when the wind is lowand blowing away from aqua-culture facilities; and
� using spray thickeners whenappropriate.
Reduce the risk of runoff by:
� delaying application if rain isexpected;
� irrigating in accordance withpesticide label instructions andmonitoring to avoid runoff andthe accumulation of excess sur-face water;
� using no-tillage or minimum-tillage cropping systems thatreduce pesticide runoff;
� using soil-incorporation meth-ods;
� using adjuvants that promotethe retention of pesticides ontreated surfaces;
� grading the surface and con-structing drainage ditches anddikes; and
� planting border vegetation.

Toxicities of specificchemicalsTable 1 defines the categories ofacute pesticide toxicities to aquat-ic organisms (categories for mam-mals are shown for comparison).
Table 2 gives the toxicity of agri-cultural chemicals to five speciesof aquatic animals: bluegill,Lepomis machrochirus; channel cat-fish, Ictalurus punctatus; rainbowtrout, Salmo gairdneri; crawfish,Procambarus sp; and freshwatershrimp, Palaemonetes sp. Toxicitiesare based on the formulationrather than the active ingredient.Toxicities can vary significantlybetween warmwater and coldwa-ter fish species and/or betweenfish and shellfish species.Farmers, chemical applicators andfisheries biologists should findthis information useful in evaluat-ing the risk of using a specificchemical on fields near fish pondsor natural waters.
The toxicity of these chemicals isexpressed as a 96-hour LC50 givenin parts per million (the columnheaded “ppm”). This representsthe amount of chemical requiredto kill 50 percent of the fish in 96hours. The larger the number, theless toxic the chemical is to fish;the smaller the number, the moretoxic it is. A concentration of onepart per million (or 1 mg/l) isequal to 2.72 pounds of materialin 1 acre-foot of water (1 acre-footequals 1 surface acre with a depthof 1 foot, or 325,850 gallons).
The weight of a chemical, inpounds, required in 1 acre-foot ofwater to give the 96-hour LC50concentration also is listed (thecolumn headed “lbs.”). Pesticidesthat are HIGHLY TOXIC (>0.1-1 ppm), EXTREMELYTOXIC (0.01-0.1 ppm), or SUPERTOXIC (<0.01 ppm) for the 96-hour LC50 appear in boldface.
The toxicities listed are laboratoryvalues and are given only as aguideline. These should not beconsidered as absolute values ofthe toxicity of these chemicals tochannel catfish, bluegill, rainbowtrout, crawfish and freshwatershrimp. Many factors influencethe toxicity of chemicals to fishand shellfish, including the age,size, species and general health offish; the temperature, pH, turbidi-ty and other physical and chemi-cal parameters of the water; theamount and kind of aquatic vege-tation present; the concentrationof the chemical and the formula-tion used; and the length of expo-sure. Aquatic toxicity may also beinfluenced by any surfactant/adjuvant used. Therefore, theactual amount of a chemicalrequired to kill fish in a specificbody of water may be higher orlower than the values given in thispublication.
