cyberManor: The first 10 years

To provide a better understanding of the advantages inherent in using multiple mobile device applications vs. a single total home control application solution for the high end custom single family residential home control market.

While several product brands are discussed in this seminar they are used as examples of a product category. These are the products with which we have had direct installation experience and therefore are confident in their performance and reliability.

Common Goal: Home Control Simplicity

cyberManor History: Single App Control

Premise Systems circa 2002

Microsoft Media Center circa 2008

Control4 circa 2011

Objections to Multi-App Model

- Too complex and hard to find multiple apps for home entertainment and control - Too many steps required to find and launch an app - No communication between apps - very limited home automation solutions - Can’t make any money selling only app based solutions

ConclusionWhat did we learn?

Multi-App Solution Benefits

Client: - Ease of use - Ease of upgrades - Multi-platform support - Light programming capability - Scalability - A la carte solutions

Custom Integrator: - Greater client satisfaction - referrals - Ease of maintenance and support - Reduced product obsolescence - Reduced custom programming

efforts

Net Effect on Business Profit

Negative Impact: - Loss of proprietary touch panel sales - Reduction in custom total home

control programming fees - Fewer total home control processors

sold

Positive Impact: - Sales of specifying business class network

equipment - Reduction of un-billable “last 5%” project labor - Projects that can be easily scaled - Reduced programming costs - More business from shorter project times,

more referrals, and greater residential trade partnership opportunities

Since these app based solutions are so easy to use why can’t I just buy these products and install these systems myself? Why do I need a CEDIA custom electronics integrator?

Here are just a few reasons: * Distributed audio/video with built in high resolution TVs and high fidelity speakers - analogue to digital upgrade * High definition indoor and outdoor camera security systems, including entry doors/gates * Whole house lighting control with nearly unlimited lighting fixture support and customized keypad controls * Motorized window shades with an extensive variety of window treatments and fabrics * Robust wired and wireless networking infrastructure * Extensive whole house low voltage prewiring for the reliable distribution of audio, video, and control signals

throughout the home to and from a centralized telecom rack. * Support: Long term, single-point of contact, remote diagnostics * Add your reasons here.

Why the CEDIA Custom Home Integrator Will Never Die

“My Sonos ENJOY set up was interesting and fun.  Two very nice people showed up on a Saturday morning at 10am - in separate cars. They actually were about 12 minutes early but I watched them sit in their respective cars until 10am sharp. They came in with a very nice cloth tote bag along with my $199 Sonos Play 1. I told them they could set it up on my kitchen table while I "downloaded the Sonos App". And then I saw one of them notice my seven Sonos products through out my house and I told them that I was just interested in learning about ENJOY.

They had already completed 3 Sonos installs that week and as you can imagine had some good stories about clients knowing nothing about their routers, WIFI passwords, firewalls, iTunes passwords, Pandora passwords, Spotify passwords, etc. They had some funny stories about what its like to go into homes and teach them about electronics....For an hour....for free....at an exact time, not a window of time. I asked the two lovely ENJOY people how they expect to ever be profitable?..(In my rolling of the eyes of course) They hummed and hawed…and said that they expect to do lots of volume and people really need help setting up their equipment. Of course they had no clue on how to make money doing it.

I taught them a few things about Sonos...managed switches, Ethernet Storms, pairing up Sonos Connect Amps with rear speakers--what TOSLINK cables are..Clearly they were overwhelmed.

They left after one hour, having sold me one $199 product...that they might have made $49 profit on...of course, I think the tote bag with the ENJOY logo is probably worth about $9. The funny thing is, there was no follow up. No user survey about my experience. No emails to get me to purchase more stuff. Nothing, and, except for the first day press I have heard nothing about ENJOY.

Marc Andreessen should have just written me the check for 20 million. I could blow through it just as fast. :)” Mat Lindstedt, Silicon Valley Installation Company
