4,518 unemployed in VanuatuBy Jane JoshuaVanuatuhasrecordedan
unemployment rate o 4.6%.
And while there are more
unemployed males than
emales in Vanuatu there are
more unemployed emales in
the urban area.
This fgure is derived rom
the Labour Force statistics
(15 years and over) which
urther revealed that the
total employed population in
Vanuatu is 42,295 and 4,518
who are unemployed (2,301
males to 2,217 emales).
However there seems to
be a balance as there are also
more males employed than
emales, that is 25,916 males
who are employed compared
to 16,379 emales.
2,798 people who make up
the 4,518 unemployed live in
the urban area and 1,720 in
the rural areas. Shea province
tops the highest concentra-
tion o unemployment in the
rural areas with 2,516 unem-
ployed people, Taea comes
second with 825, Sanma has
791, Malampa has 312, Pena-
ma has 67 people and Torba
the lowest with seven unem-
ployed people.
With a growth rate o 2.3%
Vanuatu s total popu lation
rests at 234,023 (119,091
males and 114,932 emales),
the bulk (176,828) live in the
rural areas and 57,195 in the
urban area.
The data was revealed in
the ofcial copy o the 2009
National Population Housing
Census (NPHC) Basic Tables
Report (Volume I) which Gov-
ernment Statistician, Simil
Johnson, rom the Vanuatu
National Statistics Ofce pre-
sented to Minister o Finance
and Economic Management,
Moana Carcasses, last week.
This is very useul and
important data.
The government needs
acts and indicators in order
to realistically plan and
address the needs o its peo-
ple and the overall economy,
said the fnance minister.
Mr. Johnson acknowledged
donors who contributed to the
expensive exercise and hard-
working sta. He told DP that
Volume II o the NPHC report
will be released in May; this
will provide detailed explana-
tions o the Basic Tables and
data contained in Volume I.

around Malekula could not
be accessed last week due
to the bad weather and the
heavy rainall that aected
the island on Tuesday.
The streams overlowed
and looded the road with
some areas aected by strongcurrents making it impossible
or vehicles to pass.
The bridge on the main
road that connects Norsup to
Lakatoro and Litzlitz whar
was completely damaged.
This is the main road that
people access or the main
services like commercial cen-tre, hospital, airport, whar,
National Bank, and the local
market. The Public works are
expected to work on anoth-
er new bridge. Currently the
people o Malekula and vehi-
cles are using another back
road to travel back and orth.
Villages rom North WestA, North West B, North East
and South East were not able
to travel to Lakatoro early last
week to sell their produce at
the market , including fsher-
men and the butchery. How-
ever due to the good weather,
starting last Wednesday and
this week everything is gettingback to normal. The market is
also back to normal. Despite
some o the roads still in a
state o ruin, river levels are
going down slowly as people
fnd other means o travelling
to the commercial centre or
services.
