Do you know what a hot air balloon is?
How do you think a hot air balloon works?
NEXTBACK
Hot air balloons are made from panels of a very light material, usually nylon. They also have a basket underneath so people can travel in them. A burner heats the air up in the balloon. This makes the balloon rise because hot air
rises. The air in the balloon becomes hotter than the air
outside it, so the balloon lifts up.

Hot air balloons are difficult to steer and they usually just go
where the wind takes them. When you want
the balloon to land, you turn down the burner so that the air cools again. This makes the balloon sink back to the ground.

Have a look at the different hot air balloons on the next slides. What
colours and patterns have been used to decorate
them?

Today we are going to be making our own hot
air balloons out of papier mâché. Let’s have a look at how we can
do this...
NEXTBACK
Blow up a balloon and secure it on a cup with some masking tape.
Cover the balloon with a thin layer of vaseline. This will stop the papier mâché
from sticking to the balloon.

How to make a papier mâché hot air balloon
NEXTBACK
Cut up lots of strips of newspaper.
Mix some PVA glue with a little water and place in a
wide bowl.

Dip a strip of newspaper into the glue and place it onto the balloon. Smooth
it down.
Keep adding strips of newspaper in the same way. Make sure you smooth each one down so it isn’t lumpy.

Once the papier mâché is dry, carefully pop the balloon and take
it out.
Keep going until you have covered the whole balloon. You should do
several layers. Leave to dry.

Paint your hot air balloon. You can hold it from the centre or
rest it on the table.
When the paint is dry, carefully cut around the bottom so you
have a smooth edge.

Next you need a basket for your balloon. You can use a plastic or
paper cup or bowl, or anything else you think might be suitable.
Punch holes in four equal places on the edge of your bowl or cup. This will
allow you to attach the basket to your balloon.

Now paint your basket. Think about the colours and what
would look nice with your balloon.
Next get an adult to help you punch 4 equally spaced holes in the bottom of your balloon. You can then string your basket to
your balloon.
