Houses today can be very different to the houses people lived in a long time ago. This is because the way houses are built change over time, as well as

ideas about what looks good and is fashionable at the time.

Today we will be finding out what houses were like at other times in the past

and how they have changed.

My name is Rulf and I lived a very, very long time ago. In the year 1215, most people lived in houses made with stone walls

and straw roofs. Most of our houses no longer exist.

Very rich people lived in castles which were made of stone. As well as lords and ladies in the castle, there were also lots of servants

who lived there too to help it run.

My name is Robert and I lived in Tudor times. It was called the Tudor period because the Tudor family were the kings and queens. You can easily spot Tudor houses because they are

made with black beams.

In between the black wooden beams is mud and straw that is

then painted white.

In the year 1524, bricks and glass were very expensive. If your house was built of brick and had glass in the

windows, people knew you were very rich.

Lots of Tudor houses are still standing today. Some modern houses are made to look like old Tudor houses. Which of these do you think is an original Tudor house and which is a modern copy?

My name is Fitzwilliam. In the year 1785, it was very fashionable to build houses in the style of the ancient Greeks. We loved symmetry, square shapes, straight lines and pillars.

By now, bricks were more affordable to most houses were built from brick. Towns were becoming much bigger and

busier. These houses are Georgian townhouses.

What can you spot on these houses?

Hello, I’m Horace. I lived in Victorian times when Queen Victoria ruled Britain. During this time, lots of factories started popping up in towns

and cities. This meant lots of houses needed to be built for the workers.

Lots of terraced houses like these

were built for poor Victorian

workers.

Lots of Victorian houses are still lived in today. You can often spot Victorian houses by the bay windows. These are

windows that curve outwards.

This is a typical Victorian townhouse made of bricks. The windows are sash windows - they

open up by sliding them up.

The richest Victorians loved to make their houses as fancy as possible with as much detail as possible. They took ideas from

lots of other periods in the past and from other countries.
