Students in EDU 435: Theory and Practice in Teaching and Learning ForeignLanguages and ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) share ideas onSIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) using the jigsaw technique, amethod of organizing classroom activity that makes students dependent on eachother to succeed. SIOP is an approach to teaching English language learners thatintegrates language and content instruction.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Anand Marri Stepping Down as Warner School of Education DeanWarner School of Education Dean Anand Marri has announced he is steppingdown, and Senior Associate Dean Brian Brent will serve as acting dean effectiveOctober 1. Marri intends to take a research leave through summer 2020 beforerelocating to be closer to family. A national search for a new dean will begin soonand will include faculty, staff, and students in the process; more information on thissearch will be available as plans develop. The Warner School has made significantprogress in recent years on its key strategic goals, including raising the school’sprofile, increasing resources, diversifying revenue streams, and promoting andsupporting the research, teaching, and practice of faculty, staff, and students.
RSRB Training October 25, 20196:30 - 9:30 p.m.LeChase Hall, Room 121
Research Subjects Review Board (RSRB) training is required for all doctoralstudents. Students ready to begin the proposal stage of their dissertation (i.e.,working on their comprehensive exams and/or ready to write their researchproposal) should attend the training prior to scheduling their proposal defense.
Faculty and students who are planning to conduct research with the intention topublish or present the results of the research beyond the UR community—and thusneed RSRB approval—are also welcome to attend. Learn more.
Future training sessions are scheduled for 1/31/20, 3/27/20, and 5/29/20.
Educational Technology Summit and Grant ProgramApply for an educational technology grant through the Educational ITGovernance Committee Innovation Grant program by November 15, or registerby October 21 to learn about the projects supported by past Innovation Grantsand additional educational technology projects, such as AEFIS, at the University’sFaculty Summit 2019: Teaching and Learning with Technology on Wednesday,October 30, from noon to 4 p.m. in the Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. Phelps Colloquium to Include FinniganWarner Professor Kara Finnigan will be one of the 2019-20 presenters for the PhelpsColloquium Series. On Wednesday, October 30, she will present “How Do We ‘Fix’Urban Schools? Moving Beyond Tests, Takeover, and Other Policy Tools” from 4 to5:30 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room of Rush Rhees Library on RiverCampus. Learn more and register.
The Phelps Colloquium was founded in 2004 as “Lunch with the Provost” by formerprovost Chuck Phelps. Though the name and format has changed, the goalremains the same: to bring members of the academic community together in arelaxed setting to hear about research taking place campus-wide, spend timewith colleagues outside their normal spheres, and promote cross-school and cross-discipline collaborations.
Follow Lammers's Indonesian ResearchIn August, Jayne Lammers, associate professor and the recipient of a prestigiousFulbright Scholar award for 2019-20, headed to Indonesia to begin researching thedigital literacy and online practices of adolescents. While in Indonesia, she is alsoorganizing and offering academic writing workshops and mentorships at the hostinstitution, Universitas Negeri Semarang [UNNES].
We look forward to following her adventures over the next five months. Stayupdated on Lammers's research and time in Indonesia through her blog.

Hursh Presents at European ConferenceDavid Hursh, professor, along with Bob Lingard of the University of Queensland,presented a paper “Resisting the Neoliberal: Parent Activism in New York StateAgainst the Corporate Reform Agenda in Schooling” at the European Conferenceon Educational Research in Hamburg, Germany in September. Sarah McGinnis’19W (MS) and doctoral student Zhe Chen were coauthors of the paper, but werenot able to attend the conference.
Lammers Keynotes in IndonesiaJayne Lammers, associate professor,presented the keynote address"Bringing Fanfiction Writing into theEnglish Classroom to ConnectLearners with Authentic Audiences" atthe 8th UNNES InternationalConference on English LanguageTeaching, Literature, and Translationin Semarang, Indonesia in
September. The conference was put on by the host institution for her Fulbright U.S.Scholar research grant. The instrumental case study presented in her talk wasconducted with doctoral student Judith Van Alstyne, and examined the designand implementation of a secondary elective course, called “Fanfiction andCreative Writing: Sharing Your Work in Online Spaces.” This talk shared findingsfrom their research and then made recommendations for English teachers toconsider when connecting language learners to online communities in theirclassrooms.

Warner Participates in SuicidePrevention WalkThe University of Rochester’s chapterof Chi Sigma Iota, the internationalhonor society in counseling, joined theRochester community at the Out ofDarkness Suicide Prevention Walk inSeptember. The walk was in support ofthose who have lost someone tosuicide and helped to promote mental health awareness. Pictured are Warnercounseling students Rachel Radovich-Chu and Amanda Vallone.
East High Hosts Literacy Excellence SummitWarner faculty and students presented at East's Literacy Excellence Summit inSeptember. Joanne Larson, Michael W. Scandling Professor of Education andassociate director of research at the Center for Urban Education Success, Carol St.George, associate professor, and Valerie Marsh, assistant professor and assistantdirector of the Center for Urban Education Success, presented "Literacy Work andCourse Offerings: University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education." Marsh and Hoff Publish ArticleValerie Marsh, assistant professor and assistant director of the Center for UrbanEducation Success, and Martha Hoff '14W (PhD) co-authored the article "NewLiteracies in Participatory Cultures: The Assumption of Trust," published in thecurrent online issue of E-Learning & Digital Media. Finnigan Discusses Urban and Regional RevitalizationKara Finnigan, professor, was a panelist for the session "What Do Schools Have toDo With Urban and Regional Revitalization?" at the American Planning Association(APA) Upstate NY Chapter Conference in Rochester in October. She, along withother panelists, discussed how schools affect urban/regional economicdevelopment and conversely how urban/regional economic development canaffect schools.
