DitchlingBeaconDitchlingBeaconhas spectacular viewsacross the weald. Itwas an Iron Age hillfort,the steep northern slopeformed a natural defence. Ditchling Beaconwas one of the chain of fires lit to warn ofinvasions such as the Spanish Armada.It is now managed by the National Trust andSussex Wildlife Trust.

Ditchling Beacon to Stanmer Park(2.8 miles)Take the 79 bus to Ditchling Beacon, walk2.8 miles to Stanmer Park (about 1 hr): fromthe car park cross the busy road and followthe South Downs Way to the east. You willneed an Ordnance Survey map or View Rangerto follow your route. Once you have reachedStanmer Village bus stop you canreturn to Brighton on the 78 bus.

The 79 bus will stop at all bus stops onits route. North of Woodbourne Garage, youcan also hail the bus to stop anywhere thatit’s safe for the driver to do so. This includesHollingbury Castle, Wild Park, Upper Lodges,Piddingworth Plantation and High Park Corner.

WalksDitchling Beacon to Ditchling Villageand Hassocks StationUsing the Ordnance Survey Explorer 122map, footpaths, tracks and lanes will takeyou on a scenic descent to picturesqueDitchling Village (approx 2 miles). FromDitchling Village it’s then a 2 mile walk toHassocks Station – via West Street and asurfaced path alongside the B2116. Thereare frequent trains from Hassocks back toBrighton or to London.

Ditchling Beacon to PatchamTake the South Downs Way west for aboutone mile, then turn south west and followthe Sussex Border Path for about 2.5 milesdown to Patcham. Catch bus 5A fromOld London Road to Brighton’s city centre.

Ditchling toNewmarket pub/Housedean Farm (6 miles)From Ditchling Beacon Car park; cross theroad and follow the South Downs Way eastalong the ridge of the downs, after 2.5 milesmake sure you follow the SDW as it takes asharp turn to the right. Keep following theSDW, when you reach the A27 there are busstops either side of the road where you cancatch the 28 or 29 bus to Lewes (near side ofthe road) or back to Brighton (far side of theroad: there is a bridge to cross the A27).

It is strongly recommended you use anOS map when walking on the Downs. The maps forthese walks are Ordnance Survey Explorer 122 orLandranger 198. Available at good bookshops.
