Tips to maintain healthy teeth“If you will take care of your teeth now, your teeth will take care of your at an older age”

Do you know why healthy teeth are important

The health of our teeth and mouth are linked to overall health and well-being in a number of ways. The ability to chew and swallow our food is essential for obtaining the nutrients we need for good health. Apart from the impact on nutritional status, poor dental health can also adversely affect speech and self-esteem

1. Brush at least twice a day and use fluoride toothpaste

Brushing keeps small food particles from becoming giant feasts for unwanted bacteria.  If possible, brush a full two minutes.  Divide the teeth into quadrants and spend at least 30 seconds on each quadrant.

Fluoride helps to harden tooth enamel and reduces your risk of decay.

Be sure your toothbrush has soft bristles

2. Flossing

Flossing is an essential part of any oral health care routine. It helps remove plaque from between your teeth, in areas that the toothbrush can't reach, and it helps prevent gum disease and dental decay.

3. Limit the sugary food and acid drinks

Acidic food and drinks can cause decayThe lower the pH number; the more acidic the product. Anything with a pH value lower than 5.5 may cause tooth decay.Sugary foods can also contribute to a range of health problems including heart disease and being overweight.Fizzy drinks can increase the risk of dental problems. The sugar can cause decay and the acid in both normal and diet drinks can dissolve the enamel on the teeth. The risk is higher when you have these drinks between meals.

4. Chewing gum helps to prevent from plaque and other tooth problems

Chew sugar free gum. Chewing gum increases saliva production, which helps to wash away plaque acid and bathe teeth in needed minerals to strengthen tooth enamel. It has been proven that using sugar free chewing gums after meals can prevent tooth decay. However, it is important to use only sugar-free gum, as ordinary chewing gum contains sugar and therefore may damage your teeth.

5 See your dentist for regular check-ups

At your check-ups, your dentist will try to find any problems early, and give you advice and treatment. He or she can advise you on how often you should have a check-up.  For adults, this can vary from three months upwards. For people with very good dental health and hygiene, this can be up to every two years.
