Fun Lab Day! Colligative Properties Lab

Freezing point depression is a colligative property.

Adding a solute (salt) to a solvent (ice water) will lower the freezing point.

Why is this important you may ask…Because, we can demonstrate

this principle by

MAKING ICE CREAM!

Ice Cream LabMaterials

Each lab group needs:1 quart-size ziploc bag1 gallon-size ziploc bag1 cup half and half1 tsp vanilla (or other flavoring)1 ½ Tbsp sugar1 cup rock salt (approx.)

1. Combine the half & half, vanilla, and sugar in the smaller bag. Close the bag and seal the top with duct tape.

2. Put the small bag inside the larger bag and pack ice all around the smaller bag.

3. Add about 1 cup of rock salt to the ice and seal the larger bag.

4. Take turns kneading the two bags together. This will break up any ice crystals that may form in the ice cream.
