Bell Work: What is your favorite subject that we have studied so far

this year?

Write a research paper based on a subject of your choice from within the eras of history

A question of your choice from any area/society in the world from Ancient History until the Middle Ages.

If you have difficulties finding a topic, we will help you find one that works.

In your paper you must be persuasive, which means answering a question with an arguments.

The best types of questions are “How” or “Why” questions.

Remember this is a HISTORY course, so all topics need to be history related. ◦ By all means pull in your own personal interests, but

make sure it fits the historical requirements of a Honors World History course by proving a point and providing evidence.

Minimum of 3 Sources (1 must be book or “print” source)

Note Cards with specific research information

◦ 3 source cards◦ 12 information cards◦ Specific Details of formatting in your Writing

Manual from earlier in the year!

Complete core structure worksheet with details and organization

◦ Must be typed

2.5-3 page minimum (any less and you don’t have enough information!)

Typed 12 Point Font (Times New Roman, Calibri or Arial) 1 inch margins Double-Spaced MLA formatted heading Correct Grammar and Punctuation

MLA formatted Works Cited Page with details of 3 sources

5 in-text citations (minimum) whenever use information from note cards

Once again… details in your writing manual

Six (6)-slide maximum PowerPoint presentation of research including:

◦ topic/question◦ 3 main arguments◦ Conclusion

◦ Template on my Haiku site-USE THIS. You may change the background and add images,

but make sure it is easy for the audience to see the information too.

Brainstorm Topics: Write down 3 possible time periods or topics in the space and write possible questions or more detailed topics you would like to look at in greater depth.

Question Examples from Previous Years:◦ How was Martin Luther’s main plan for reformation

misinterpreted, and how does it lead to the Protestant Reformation?

◦ How are Richard the Lionhearted and Saladin similar and different, and who best displays the characteristics of chivalry?

◦ How were the Crusades effective or not effective in spreading the Christian religion?

Take a Peer Review Packet and get out your rough draft.

Read through the entire essay!

◦ Does the essay make sense?

◦ Can you, without reading the details, summarize its main point or points?

◦ The paper should convince you of a particular viewpoint and it should seem a thoughtful, coherent piece of writing that you can readily understand.

Essay is typed, double spaced and in 12 point font◦No double space between paragraphs!

Essay has the correct MLA heading & page numbers◦MLA Heading should NOT be on every page

Essay has a creative title that is centered and double-spaced

Essay has 1” Margins and is a minimum of 2.5 pages in length

Essay includes a minimum of 5 in-text citations

In-text citations are “quote” (author #). or According to author, “quote” (#).

Examples:◦ Direct Quotes

Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263).

Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263).

◦ Paraphrase Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative

process (263).

Works Cited Page has a minimum of 3 sources Works Cited Page is formatted correctly (“Works Cited

Page” is centered at top) Bibliography information is alphabetized and

formatted correctly

Take out your Peer Review Packet and your rough draft!

Underline/highlight the thesis statement on their rough draft.

◦ Can you find it? ◦ Does the thesis state the main idea and some of

the reasoning behind that idea? ◦ Is the thesis supported in the body of the paper?

Try to re-write the thesis statement to include more/less information based in the guidelines!

Are all words spelled correctly?

Are all numbers under ten spelled out? (Numbers over 10 can be numerical)

Are all words spelled out completely? (No abbreviations, contractions, etc.)

Do all sentences have a capitalized first letter and punctuation at the end?

Are all commas, colons and semi-colons used properly?

Are all proper nouns (names, places) capitalized?

Sentence Structure: check that there are no run-on or incomplete sentences

Noun/Verb Agreement: check that nouns and verbs agree in tense (past!) and number.

Homophones: Check for words that sound alike but mean different things, like accept/except, effect/affect, there/their/they’re

Transitions: check transitions by reading through the paper, paying close attention to the last and first sentences in every paragraph. Do these sentences provide a basic outline of the information covered in the paper?

help them.
