The culture of your organization matters. It matters for the people you’re trying to reach—whether they are customers or congregants. Itmattersforthepeopleyou’retryingtolead—whetherthey’restafforvolunteers. And frankly it matters to you.

Your life is too sacred to squander in an organization that drains life out of you.

Great culture is not hard to spot. Thinkofyourfavoriteplacestoshop,yourfavoritebrandsandproducts,your favoriteplacestorelaxandhangout.Oddsaretheseproductsandenvironments havesomethingincommon—theyengageyou.Itcouldbetheenergy,the atmosphere,thequality,theattitudesofthepeople,oranycombinationof theabove. Butattheendoftheday,greatculturedrawsyouinandkeepsyoucomingback.

Theenvironmentyoucreateinyourorganizationiseitherattractingorrepelling. Thereisrarely(Iwouldsaynever)amiddleground.And,asleaders,wesetthe tone for the culture. Wehavetoownit.Wehavetostewardit.Wehavetosetitandwehaveto maintain it.
