Three Gorges Dam ChinaBY: ZACH RUSSELL

Areas Affected

Displacement of millions of people from the Yangtze river region.

It affects the mostly the region of Asia It could have an affect on a global level in the

future.

Availability of Water in this Region

In Asia, water shortages are emerging as a major social and economic threat, especially in China and India.

Water shortages in China’s urban areas are especially serious. Of the country’s 640 major cities, more than 300 face water shortages.

Reasons behind Three Gorges Dam

One of the reasons that the Three Gorges dam was built was to prevent flooding further downstream.

Another reason why the Three Gorges Dam was constructed was to generate electricity.

The Three gorges dam was mainly built across the Yangtze River to control the amount of water allowed through.

Major Problems with Three Gorges Dam

The problem is its causing landslides Stopping water from flowing to the people

downstream. Migration from Floods and the Building of the

Dam. Displacement of Residents

How has it been Addressed?

One project South–North Water Diversion Project will transfer water from, among other rivers, the Yangtze and its tributaries to northern China, which suffers from chronic water shortages.

These problems should be addressed through more research and monitoring, and more efficient dam operation.

Plans to build a cascade of 12 dams on a section of the upper Yangtze which, combined, will have a capacity more than twice that of the Three Gorges Dam.
