Awkward moments-we've all experienced them. You run into someone at the grocery store whom you've been avoiding out ofanger. A friend overhears a criticism that wasn't intended for her ears. Your
wife greets you dressed up for dinner, and you realize you've forgotten yourwedding anniversary...again. lt can be difficult to smoothly navigate thesemoments-to minimize hurt feelings and reestablish intimacy. So imagine themore-than-simply-awkward moment between Peter and Jesus in today'sGospel reading.Peter did more than just forget a birthday or spread gossip; he denied ever
knowing Jesus, and he did it when Jesus was at his most vulnerable. That kind
of betrayal would permanently end most relationships. But Jesus comes back
to Peter and asks three times whether Peter loves him-a threefold reversal
of the three denials. Peter must be embarrassed, afraid and, at the end, even
frustrated at being asked so many times. But Jesus persists and reestablishes
their intimate friendship. ln fact, he calls Peter to even greater leadership-such was the trust Jesus placed in his formerly cowardly friend. We have much to learn from this episode. Peter shows us that no one is toofar gone to be redeemed by the Lord. Peter's sin was great, but Jesus' love
was greater. Jesus doesn't let awkwardness or discomfort get in the way offorgiveness and healing. And Jesus calls even well-practiced sinners togreatness.ln the Easter season, we celebrate Jesus' new risen life; at the same time,we're challenged to rise to new life from our sin,'betrayals, and failings. Jesus
hasn't given up on us, and he never will. We're never too far gone for theLord. J an e I Eske r s u n dayb u lleti n @ li g u o ri. o rg

On April eoth, Bishop Larry Silva sent out a letter on immigration to theparishes. Since the majority of us living in Hawaii are descendents ofimmigrants we may take to heart what the Church is asking us to do and
even begin a practice of welcoming strangers in our midst. "Do not neglect
hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels." (Heb. 4:z)

de ar PAD Rf,
I went to reconciliation and was giuen a penance that was
wdy too Lnrd for uhat I hnd done. I told tlat n tlte priest,
and hc said I needed to do it aryru)ay.Well, I'm not going to.
Doesn't the penance need tofit the crime? And f I don't do it,
does thnt mean I'm notforgiuen?
A The Catechism of the Catlnlic Church lists three required-fr4 ^ acts of a penitent in the sacrament of reconciliation. The
first t'wo are to repent and to confess to the priest. Thethird is to intend to repair the harm done by sin-that is,
do penance (1491, 1494). The limited penance the priestprescribes is like a deposit or first payment on yourresolve to avoid sin and live a better Christian life. You decided that the penance the priest gave you was tooharsh. Mryb. it was. You omitted it, and now you wonderif you're forgiven. You are. Certainly you intend to live a
better Christian life.Next time you go to confession, tell the priest whathappened. He can and will make an adjustment for you inthe matter of the penance. But please note that you are
acting as your own judge, but that's the priest's role-
Along with serving as father, teacher, and physician, he is
also judge.Mryb. he was trying to tell you that your sins are worse
than you thought.Fr. John Hamrogue, CSsR sundaybulletin@liguori.org
