4 stages of cognitive

development

sensori motor

Sensorimotor (0-2)O This stage is characterized by the absence of language.

O This period is based primarily on immediate experience through the senses.

O Object permanence &separation anxiety develops during this stage

O Children at this stage are egocentric

6 stages of development during

sensorimotor

Stage 1. birth O Behavior is reflexive.

Stage 2. 1-4 monthsO Learning to control some aspects of behavior.

Stage 3. 4-8 monthsO Repeats behavior that are

interesting.

Stage 4. 8-12 months

O Goal directed behavior.

Stage 5. 12-18 monthsO Make use of trial and error to achieve

desired end.

Stage 6. 18-24 monthsO Became a symbol user through

language pretend play.

Preoperational stage

Preoperational stage (2-7 years old)

O Children in this stage talks to stuffed toys, they will tell about imaginary friends and tell wild stories.

O This is the age adults communicates with the children.

Concrete operational stage

Concrete operational (7-11 y.o)

O At this stage the child’s thinking becomes more logical & systematic.

O Children learns through abstract symbols.

O The child cannot yet apply this logic to problems that are primarily hypothetical and verbal.

Formal operations

Formal operations (11-16y.o)

O The individual comes to think at the level of adults when they are at their best.

O They can attain logical, rational, abstract strategies.

O Perspective thought or relativism are formed.

O The process of reading development as compared to other stages is significantly different.
