Prewriting

Prewriting has two steps: Brainstorming and Organizing.Prewriting is considered anything you do before actually

writing the paper such as: thinking, taking notes, talking to others, brainstorming, outlining, and gathering information, research, etc.

Prewriting is important so that you can gather all of your thoughts and ideas about the topic in an organized fashion.

QUIT

Drafting

Drafting includes putting your ideas into sentences in paragraphs, concentrating on ideas and supporting details.

In this step, there is really no focus on things like spelling, grammar, etc. The main focus is just getting your ideas down on paper.

QUIT

Idea…

After and/or during the drafting phase, as you’re beginning to edit your work, keep in mind you want to keep the interest of the reader. Be selective with your word choices and make sure to use engaging words to draw the reader in.

QUIT

Revising

In revising, you start to really think about what the reader needs to know and wants to hear and you implement those things in your paper.

The document now becomes more ‘reader-centered’ instead of ‘writer-centered.’

Continue with further organization.Cut unrelated details and add important, missing

detail.Change awkward or boring wording.

QUIT

Editing

Editing is where things like grammar, spelling and mechanics are checked and refined.

Re-reading is a key part of editing; make sure everything is exactly how you want it.Reading aloud or having someone read to you can be

very helpful because you may hear things differently in your head than when you hear them outloud.

Make sure all formatting is correct. This is the last process of writing your document.

QUIT

Publishing

Publishing is often looked over as a step in the writing process, but it’s the step where you’re given an opportunity to share your work. Publishing doesn’t mean that you actually ‘publish’ the paper, it’s just your chance to share what you’ve written.
