Employee Evaluations are here!

In every employee evaluation I have been a part of, there was always one thing in common: (No, not low scores) Soft Skills. Communication, critical thinking, and leadership continue to rank among the highest top-ics in our chapter’s annual survey for a good reason. These are the per-sonal traits and interpersonal skills required to succeed and advance in Internal Audit profession. Training for soft skills is isn’t natural for most auditors; you can’t improve them by staring at a computer screen, study-ing, or a through a certification process. Training is performed through real life experiences and requires you to put yourself out there to im-prove your interactions with people.

But never fear, the Tulsa IIA has you covered. Eliot Stenzel is coming all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico to share with us his training techniques on how to improve one of the most important soft skills - Communication. Eliot’s Seminar will be very fun and interactive, covering things like recognizing body language, communication and presentation skills, listening, and emotional intelligence. Agile Internal Auditing Presented by Chris Hill, Senior Manager, Deloitte & Touche LLP

Chris Hill, Senior Manager, Deloitte & Touche

LLP, is an experienced Senior Manager spe-cializing in internal audit, internal controls and

business transformation, with a focus in the oil

and gas industry. He has recently led several

efforts internal and external to Deloitte to pro-vide innovative strategies to internal audit.

Chris has played a lead role in projects with

responsibilities including project oversight, in-

ternal audits, business process assessment and redesign, developing robust process documentation and

flowcharts, and developing client audit and compliance strategies.

Chris has been with Deloitte’s Internal Audit practice for 15 years.

This presentation will review the Agile methodology for internal

audit, including its basic principles, benefits, implementation strat-

egies, and lessons learned.

Objectives:

• Understand the key principles of Agile auditing

• Understand the pros and cons of Agile auditing

• Understand lessons learned from other internal audit de-partments who have implemented Agile

• Understand practical strategies for implementing Agile methodologies in internal audit

Stay in the right lane on 64/51 and exit

on the Gilcrease Museum Road and

then turn right. At the next traffic light

(Edison) turn right. Travel ½ mile and

turn left on Union Ave. Club entrance

is immediately on right.

FROM RIVERSIDE DRIVE Travel north on Riverside until you

come to Denver Avenue and merge to

the right. Once on Denver, travel ap-

proximately 1.5 miles to Edison and

turn left. Travel approximately 1 mile to

Union (you will pass the golf course on

the right). Turn Right on Union. Club

entrance is immediately on right.

FROM THE BROKEN ARROW

EXPRESSWAY (64/51) Travel Westbound on 64/51. After passing through downtown Tulsa the road curves right heading North. (Make

sure you stay on 64/51) Immediately after the curve start getting in the left lane to exit toward Sand Springs. (This

is kind of a bad spot traffic wise because you have to cross three lanes of traffic fairly quickly). After the Sand

Springs exit get in the right lane and exit on Gilcrease Museum Road and turn right. At the next traffic light

(Edison) turn right Travel ½ mile and turn left on Union Ave. Club entrance is immediately on right.

Chapter Email Update

During the October general meeting, Matt announced that The IIA is moving to

a centralized email account. We will no longer be using the Gmail accounts

created for each officer position. In order to ensure you receive Chapter com-

munications and future newsletters, be sure to add Chapter18@iiachapters.org

to your address book today. This will include current and future newsletters,

CPE certificates for meeting and seminar attendance, and any other communi-

cation that will be sent to our member directory who have opted in to email

communications.

If you have not updated your communication preferences recently, now would

be a great time to do so to ensure your current email address is set up on your

IIA profile and your communication preferences are set.

Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) The Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) is an achievement/recognition pro-

gram for chapters in North America that uses points /credits to recognize chap-

ter activities that align with the North American Strategic Plan in three service

categories: Service to Members, Service to the Profession, and Chapter Re-

porting. There are many things members can contribute to helping the chapter

earn points.

Members and member companies who participate or perform the following ac-

tivities can earn points for our Chapter:

• Speaking engagements inside or outside your organization

• Receive a Quality Assessment for your audit shop

• Participate in a QAR quality review team (IIA and non-IIA sponsored)

• Published articles

• Junior Achievement Volunteer hours

• …and many more programs.

Artificial Intelligence and Robotic Process Automation: Opportunity and Responsibility for Internal Audit November 13, 2018 | 1:00-2:00 p.m. ET | 1 CPE

Business adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic process automation (RPA) brings both opportunity

and responsibility for internal audit. Internal audit has the opportunity to be a trusted advisor and collaborate with

the other functional and business unit leaders on ways to enhance the control environment as business process-

es are redesigned and automated using AI and RPA. Within internal audit, new testing approaches will be need-

ed for automated processes. Internal audit professionals also have a responsibility to understand risks intro-

duced by AI and RPA and ensure their firm’s controls are well designed and operating effectively to mitigate

those risks. They have a vital role to play in helping the business design and develop responsible AI; that is, es-

tablish assurance processes to manage the impact associated with risks like bias and security. And, perhaps the

greatest opportunity: testing of controls and other departmental tasks can be automated through RPA, expand-

ing internal audit’s capacity and freeing auditors to focus on more value-added activity. Learn more.

Academic Relations Update The Academic Relations committee members have been busy the past few weeks with multiple student events

at TU and NSU-BA. All of the events focused on Internal Audit as a career option and we had several students

ask us questions about what it is like to be an internal auditor. We were also able to hand out information,

swag, and candy! These events would not be possible without the volunteers who show up and spent time

talking with students. So far this year we have connected with close to 100 students! If you are interested in

attending or participating in an upcoming panel discussion at ORU or NSU please let us know. And if you see

a student at your table during a monthly luncheon, be sure to tell them how glad you are that they came to

learn more about what we do. For questions or if you’re interested in volunteering with the Academic Rela-

Salvation Army Angel Tree Christmas is just around the corner and the Tulsa

Chapter will once again partner with the Salvation

Army to help those less fortunate through the

Salvation Army Angel Tree. The date for the volun-

teer opportunity will be announced shortly. We will

have 30 minute shifts to be onsite at the Angel Tree to

help potential donors with selecting a child to brighten

their Christmas season, answer questions and process gifts. Please consider

taking part in this wonderful event.

possible for further details, as spots fill up quickly!

Here’s how it works…

The Perks: Any Company or individual IIA member can purchase as many (or as few) tickets as they would like

for the current 2018-2019 season at $23 per ticket, $2 discount.

The Rules: Tickets are to be used by IIA members for the regularly scheduled monthly meetings, which are

September through May. Tickets can also be used for the Joint Meeting in December. Unused tickets expire

after the May meeting and can not be rolled over to the 2019-2020 season. Tickets can not be applied toward

other IIA events including seminars or conferences. The last day to purchase advance tickets is October 31,

2018. Please contact the Treasurer, Emily Marang at emarang@bokf.com or (918) 728-8756 for additional

information or to purchase tickets.

He has taught all over the world for the Orlando, Florida based Institute of Internal Auditors, is a Chief

Accountant for a software as a service (SaaS) company in Albuquerque, New Mexico, worked as a pro-

duction controller on 5 motion pictures and helped numerous individuals and companies with their tax

obligations.

Eliot has instructed accounting and audit staff of the Navajo Nation, the Ministry of Finance Vietnam, the United Nations World

Food Program, an oil services company in Suriname, South America, the Panama Canal Commission, Los Angeles Metro Trans-

it and more.

His work in motion picture production helped earn $10 million in tax rebates. Eliot also negotiated with the IRS to reduce a

client tax liability by $250K, and as Chief Accountant for a SaaS company shepherded the growth of the client’s revenue from

zero to $1.5 million annually in a few short years.
