Welcomeback.Yesterdaywastheannualpicnic,celebratingourre-turntoamoreregularroutineofworshipandChristian formation.Thetraditionalbouncyhouseandhennatattooswerecomplement-ednicelywithgumboandothergreatfoodthankstothegenerosityof Terresa and Kevin Davis, parishioners and owners of BlueacreSeafood and The Steelhead Diner. Laura Sargent and Jim Marlowprovidetheorganizingleadershipforthisyear’spicnic. MarjBakertookparishionerheadshotsforthe2014directory.

Youmayhavenoticedbeautifulilluminationsliningthewallsofthemain sanctuary partnered with text from Holy Scripture. TheseprintsarefromTheSaintJohn’sBible,andhavebeenhungtocatchyoureyeandinspireyoutoenterintoayearofstudyingandprayingwith theBible. As youwill see, theBiblewe are carrying into thesanctuary and reading from is huge! It is a book from The SaintJohn’sBibleHeritageEdition,whichisthe irsthandwrittenandillu-minatedBiblein500years.Forthenextyear,wewillhavethePen-tateuch(which is the irst ivebooksof theBible)andGospelsandActswithusatEpiphany.WewillreadfromtheGospelduringser-vices. Wewill preach fromeither thePentateuch (particularly theirst eleven chapters of Genesis) or the Gospels each Sunday. WewillstudyTheSaintJohn’sBibleduringtheSundayeducationhour.WewillalsobeformingsmallBiblestudygroupsthatwillenterintothesacredpracticeofVisioDivina.Thisisanancientspiritualdisci-plineofmeditatingupontheilluminationsofscripture,andpatternmatching these imagines with those from your own life, and thencarryingtheminto thecontextof thewrittenword. PleasesignupforaVisioDivinagroup!

Thisisalsotheendofourseasonforpreparingourselvesfortheres-torationandrenewalofourcampus.SinceJune2,eighteengather-ingshavehappenedwhere thecongregationhasbeengivenanop-portunitytofurthercontributetheirthoughtsandfeelingsaboutthisholy sanctuarywe call Epiphany. The input has been helpful andinsightful,andnowwearepreparedtosuccessfullyreachthecom-

 

pletion of the fundraising part of the campaign. The goal of ourfundraisingis256pledgedcontributions,whichwehavesetasthenumberfor100%participation.Theprayeristhatthiswillgener-atesomewherebetween$8and$10milliondollarswhichwe feelwillenableustodoafullrestorationandrenovationoftheChapel,Church, grounds and Parish Hall. If you would like more infor-mationaboutthisbuildingcampaign,pleasecometooneofthe iveopenconversationswewillbehavingSundaymorningsthroughoutthefall.Also,pleaseprayerfullyconsideryourpledge.

TheBibleisthesubjectofEpiphany'sadulteducationprogramyear,SeptembertoMay,onSundays,9:15amto10:15am.Togeth-erwewillexploretherichesoftheBible,themostinfluentialliter-aryworkofalltime.Despitethediversityandapparentdisconnect-ednessofitscontents,theBiblepresentsacoherentmessage:God'sredeemingloveforhumanityasexpressedthroughtheexperiencesofethnicIsrael,andthelife,death,andresurrectionofJesusChrist.Thiscompellingnarrativeanditssignificanceforallhumanexperi-encewillbeexplainedtousbyourclergyandlaypresenters.Wewilllearnhowtheseancientstoriesspeaktoourlivestoday.Wewillseehowthesesacredscripturescanbearesourcefortrueful-fillmentandmeaning.Wewilldevelopnewperspectivesandgainnewinsightsaboutourspiritualjourney.Wewillrevitalizeourawarenessofoureternaldestiny.

EnhancingourexplorationofholyscripturewillbeTheSaintJohn'sBible,thefirsthand–illuminated,calligraphyBibleproducedsincetheMiddleAges.Epiphanyisreceivingonloanoneofahandfulofmuseumquality,full–sizereproductionsofbooksselectedfromTheSaintJohn'sBible.Inaddition,insupportofTheSaintJohn'sBible,wewillenjoyspecializedstudymaterials,andpresentationsbyaSaintJohn'sUniversitybiblicalexpert,aswellasbyaSeattleartistwhoseillustrationscontributedtothemasterwork.

WeareaccustomedtothepreacherinthepulpitasthepreeminentteacheroftheBible.Yet,fornearly2,000years,Christianshaveusedarttoexpoundthebiblicalstoryandteaching.Thispresenta-tionexaminesilluminationsfromTheSaintJohn’sBibleandmakesthecasethatartistsandmusiciansandpoetsdeservetobeplacedintheranksofthemosteloquentpreachersoftheGospel.TheSaintJohn’sBibleisthefirsthand–written,illuminatedBibleproducedinmorethan500years,andmuseumqualityreproduc-tionsofseveralofitsbooksarecomingtoEpiphany.Theilluminat-edPentateuch,theGospels,andActswillformthefoundationofayearof+TECprogramming,andwe’llexploretheirstoriesandthemesandrevelationsthroughsermons,minyans,andsmallgroups.Tointroducetheyear,we’veinvitedFatherEricHollasfromSaintJohn’sBenedictineMonasteryinCollegeville,MN.FatherHollaswasontheteamofmonkswhooriginallyconceivedofthisprojectandistheforemostexpertonTheSaintJohn’sBible.Here-ceivedhisBAinhistoryfromPrincetonUniversity,completedhisseminarystudiesatSaintJohn’sSchoolofTheologySeminary,andreceivedhisPhDinmedievalstudiesfromYale.Since1980,hehasbeenamemberofthefacultyoftheSchoolofTheologySeminaryandDepartmentofTheologyatSaintJohn’sUniversity,andfrom1993to2002hewasExecutiveDirectoroftheHillMonasticManu-scriptLibraryatSaintJohn’sUniversity.

CALLINGALLBOYS!!EpiphanyParishwasoneofthe irstchurchesinSeattletosponsoraBoyScouttroopandCubScoutPack,andourboysarestillgatheringhere,over85yearslater.FurthermoreweareoneofthebiggestgroupsinthegreaterSeattlearea,withover60Scoutsandover50Cubs.ThenewseasonbeginsthisSeptem-berandwewanttowelcomefamilieswithyoungboystojoin.CubScoutshasaspecialprogramforeachgrade:FirstGradersareTi-gers,SecondGradersareWolves,ThirdGradersareBearsandFourth/FifthGradersareWebelos.BoyScoutswelcomesBoysage11through17.Scoutingisabouthavingfun,learningskills,spend-ingtimeintheoutdoors,anddoingserviceprojectsforthecommu-nity.Despitethecontroversyoverrestrictivemembershippoliciesatthenationallevel,Epiphany’sCubsandScoutsWELCOMEALLboysandtheirfamilies.ParentsareabigpartofCubScouting.Par-entsarestronglywelcometoparticipateinBoyScouting.PleaseconsiderjoiningEpiphany’sscoutingopportunities.
