Weapons of World War 1

Causes of the World War 1

• One of the causes of the war was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. He was killed on June 28,1914 by a member of the Black Hand. The Black Hand was a criminal organization that went against Archduke Ferdinand’s rule.

Alliances in World War 1

The alliances in World War 1 were the British, the French , Russia, and Serbia. They were called the Allies during the war. Germany and Austria Hungary were called the Central Powers.

Trench warfare.

• Trench warfare was used for this war to protect troops from the sometimes constant fire of the enemies. Sometimes people would stay in the trenches for months where they could not shower and where the same clothing every day.

Submarines

• The United States joined the War on the Allies side, after Germany destroyed many of their ships, like the passenger ship the Lusitania.

Submarines

• The Germans used submarines in this war to attack Allie ships and were also used to spy on enemy troops. The Lusitania, a huge passenger ship was sunk May 7, 1915 by the Germans. German submarines were called U-boats.

Machine guns

• Machine Guns were introduced during World War 1. These weapons were useful in killing enemy infantry at a very quick rate. They were introduce in 1895.

Poison gas

• German forces were first to use poison gas in World War 1. The most dangerous gas that they made was called mustard gas. This type of gas was fired in shells by soldiers.

Tanks

Tanks

• Tanks were first used in this War by Britain in September 15th 1916. They were first used in the Battle of Somme. Before World War 1 they used army trucks which didn’t have the same off road capabilities as a tank. Tanks are metal vehicles that we still use in modern warfare. They were mostly unstoppable in the war.

The Black Hand

The Black hand

• The Black hand was an organization made to try to unite all South Slav territories.

• One of the members of the Black Hand assassinated Archduke Ferdinand.

• Once this occurred the Black Hand was gathered up and brought to prison or either sentenced to death.

The Battle of Somme

The Battle of Somme started on July 1, 1916. The battle was very bloody because there were people on both sides that were killed. The British lost the most though because the British generals told the soldiers to walk to the German trenches when the generals thought the Germans were defeated. When the British soldiers did they were quickly shot down by the Germans.

Airplanes

Airplanes

• Airplanes were used first in World War 1 for warfare. They were already used before this, but not for battle. In this War they were used to drop bombs, spy on enemies, and eventually enemy air fighters and these planes got into air battles called dogfights.

Zeppelin

• These had a very short time of battle in World War 1.They were used to bomb people and shoot people. They weren’t were used in the war very long because one they were to easy to shoot down, and two they were filled with flammable gas.

Communication

• They had a good amount of communication during this war. They had phones and had airplanes to send messages throughout battle front.

Shell Shock • Shell Shock was a

illness that soldiers in the war had. The symptoms were giddiness, lack of concentration, and headaches. If soldiers got this they were called a traitors and then executed. Really the illnesses were caused by German Shell cannons.

The Treaty of Versailles

• This treaty ended the World War 1. It was signed in 1919 it stated that the blame of the War would be on Germany. Germany would lose land, amongst a lot of other things.
