The WaypoinTof Bainbridge Island
Citizen’s Task Force Mission Statement :To transform the old UNOCAL property site into a viable, beautiful
“Gateway” to Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap Penninsula.
more about the waypointNearly two years of effort on the part of over 50 volunteers in cooperation with three governmental agencies will culminate this fall in the dedication of The Waypoint. Located at the corner of Wins-low Way and Highway 305 at the former Unocal gas station site, on property co-owned by the City of Bainbridge Island and Kitsap Transit, The Waypoint will be a welcoming first impression for Island visitors and a welcome home to returning residents reflecting the elemental character, history and sense of place that is Bainbridge Island.
Designed by architect Johnpaul Jones and built by PHC Construction, the project is budgeted at $380,000. The Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island has helped to launch the fundraising campaign with a lead matching gift of $80,000. Additional major donation opportunities are available through sponsor-
ship of several site components; historical markers, benches, stone walls and a beach glass compass rose and mosaic beach glass tiles.
Volunteers have already provided hours of assistance in design, planning, permitting, environmental and legal review. Also active in the project are the Bainbridge Island Historical Society, Chamber of Commerce, Arts and Humanities Council and Downtown Association. Upon completion, The Waypoint will be maintained and operated by the Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District.

what the community saysFrank Kitamoto “Gateway Park” would be a fitting way to welcome “walk on” visitors to Winslow and our Island.
Ann LovejoyThe Waypoint project offers a chance to transform the island’s front door from an
eyesore into a place of welcoming, gracious beauty. Let’s take it!
Sallie Maron“It’s wonderful to see how the citizens of Bainbridge have worked together to cre-ate a beautiful welcome to our Island community.”
Dwight SuttonWaypoint transforms a dreary corner into a provocatively attractive, gentle wel-
come to the visitor. Originating from the vision and energy of dedicated commu-nity members, it’s among the best projects we’ve ever seen here.
Stephen Davis“The Waypoint will be replacing what has been a very unattractive property with a beautiful and welcoming public space for everyone visiting Bainbridge Island.”
Johnpaul JonesThe focus of the “Waypoint” project is the spirit of welcome and the natural
beauty of our Bainbridge Island community. It will have a lovely, simple design that allows a moment of pause among daily comings and goings on the Island.
