Originally by Pauli Saloranta & Lotte MalkakorpiEducational Committee, GSF

Days in a Scout camp (calculations from Finland)

•National Jamboree about 90 000 days every six years (1-2 project leaders)

•2012 Disctrict Camps about 135 000 days every about six years (8 project leaders)

•2009 Local unit camps about 134 000 days every year (about 1000 camp leaders)

• Plus the preparation for the camps!•Compared to the ”bread and butter” weekly activities: 35 weeks x 1 hour x 40 000 Scouts/Guides : 18 hours (of wakeup time in camps ;) ≈ 80 000 days per year (905 local unit leaders)

•Conclusion: Camps are intensive and quality Scouting/Guiding!•Roverway 36 000 days (1 project leader)•Satahanka – International Sea Scout camp 9 000 days every 5 year (1 project leader)

Thesis’ of this presentation:•Big projects produce more ”Scoutput” than a full year of weekly Scouting at the local unit

•Big projects enable activities not reachable in the local level• We are already pretty good at organizing projects -> focus

should be on how to make the content superduper• The goals of Scouting are educational, meaning they happen

inside a person. Big project are planned according to outer activities and events.

• Scout education is to be carried out in ALL aspects of a project, not just in the Programme

• Big project is the heaviest tool for making your strategy into action and t o l e a d y o u r o r g a n i z a t i o n!
