The UCB Chiapas Plant Collection: Conservation and Public Education

In the early 198Os, the Botanical Garden of the Uni-

versity of California at Bcrkcley reccivcd a gift of wild-

collected seeds and cuttings of 250 species of plants native

to the monrane regions of Chiapas, the southernmost state

of Mexico. The material had been collected by Dr. Dew

nis Breedlove, curator of rhe herbarium of the California

Academy of Sciences and director of the ongoing Flora of

Chnpas project. Many of the species Breedlove gave to
