The Story of Jacob

After Jacob fooled his brother and father, Rebekahsent him away to his uncle Laban’s house. Labanwas a successful herdsman. Jacob was hoping tofind work with him.

On his journey, Jacob spent a night sleeping onthe ground. He used a large rock as his pillow.Jacob dreamed that he saw a ladder going fromheaven to earth. Angels were walking up and downon it. God was up above. God told Jacob that hewould be blessed more than he could imagine. Hisdescendants would be more in number than thesand of the sea. When Jacob woke up, he set uphis pillow as a pillar and memorial. Jacob called theplace Beth-el, which means “House of God.”

Near the end of his journey, Jacob came to a wellnear Haran. He met a beautiful young woman whowas drawing water for her sheep. Her name wasRachel. She was Laban’s daughter. Rachel tookJacob to her father’s house. They all rejoiced tohave a member of the family visit.

After a while, Jacob wanted to marry Rachel.Jacob promised to work for his Uncle Laban forseven years so he could marry Rachel. Labanquickly agreed. Jacob was a good man and a hardworker. Seven years passed, and Jacob was excit-ed to marry his wife. But Laban tricked Jacob intomarrying his other daughter, Leah. Laban said thatJacob could marry Rachel too. But he had to workanother seven years. Jacob agreed to his uncle’sscheme. He married Rachel as well.

Leah was a good wife. She gave Jacob foursons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah. Jacobloved Rachel more than Leah. But Rachel couldnot have children. She was very sad about this.She had her maid Bilhah have children for her.Bilhah gave Jacob two sons, Dan and Naphtali.Leah saw this and was perhaps a little jealous.She had her maid have children for Jacob as well.Leah’s maid Zilpah had two sons named Gad andAsher. Later, Leah had two more sons, Issacharand Zebulun. She also had a daughter namedDinah.

After this, God took pity on Rachel. He gave hertwo sons for Jacob—Joseph and Benjamin. We willlearn about Joseph in the next Lesson.
