• LOTS of water!!• Low, flat land• Flooded areas due to no drainage• Areas of wetlands-always wet!!!

How can a wetland be valuable?

• Act like a giant sponge-soaking up water• Act as filters-prevent pollution from the water• Homes to animals and plants

Landforms in this region

• Coastlines• Farms• Florida is a peninsula-area of land that is surrounded by water• Rolling hills, Appalachian mountains• Islands!

Climate and Weather

• Warm weather year round-hot summers and very mild winters• Near the Gulf-usually very hot and humid because of moisture• Sea and land breezes-warm and cool air• Lots of rain

Storm Season

• Hurricanes causing many floods

Protecting Cities

• Because this region has low land, heaving rains can cause flood• They use levees-large walls along the shores to keep rivers from overflowing

Hurricane Damage

• Hurricane Katrina hit land in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005• The levees that were supposed to hold back the water broke and

water rushed in and flooded the city• Many lost their lives and homes
