TheProducer Knownas“TheKingofwinesandwineofKings”BarolohaslongbeenestablishedasoneofItaly’sfinestappellations,yetsometimesthewinescanbeaustereandtannic.Throughacenturyofwinemaking,Azeliahasmasteredastylethatbalancesclassicstructurewithlovelyperfumeandsoftness,creatingwinesthatareanabsolutepleasuretodrink.Remarkably,Azeliacontinuestobeunbeatablevaluetotheconsumer,evenascollectorsfearBarolomayescalateoutoftherealmofaffordability.AzeliaisownedbythefamilyofLuigiScavino.Itwasfoundedbyhisgreatgrandfather,Lorenzo,in1920whowasthefirsttobottlewinesfromthefamily’svineyards.ThesmallfamilyestateinCastiglioneFalettohasacquiredoverfourgenerationssomeoftheregion’sfinestvineyardsincludingthefamedcruBriccoFiasco.Thefamilyfarms16haofvinesinthecommunesofCastiglioneandSerralungaonbothHelvetianandTortoniansoils.Mostofthevineswereplantedinthe‘40sandareonlyreplacedaseachvinedieswithselectionmassalefromeachvineyard.Whilethewinesofthe‘90swereconsideredpartofMarcdiGrazia’s‘BaroloBoys’modernistmovementtodaythefocusisintenselyontheworkinthevineyard.Oldvinesandrigorousgreenharvestinginthevineyardalongwithorganicfarmingtechniquesensurethatlittleinterventioninthewineryisnecessary.Theyemployintegratedpestmanagementandnochemicalfertilizers.Thesoilistendedwithcovercropsandorganictreatments.ThemodernequipmentallowsLuigithecontrolandfreedomofusingnativeyeastandnofiltering/fining.Theresultiswinesthatareexpressiveoftheirsourcesyetbalancedandapproachableonrelease,andaftermanyyearsofaging.ThesamelevelofattentionisgiventoeachwineinthelinefromtheDolcettototheBaroloFiasco.WhileAzeliamayflyundertheradaritswineshavenotescapedattention.RobertParkerdescribedthewines,“winesfrom(Luigi)Scavino’sestate,Azelia,canholdtheirownwiththeverybestintheregion.Thewinescombinepowerandelegancewithalevelofvirtuositymatchedbyfewintheregion...therecanbenodoubtthattheoverallbalanceandsenseofproportionofthesewinesisexcellent.”(WineAdvocate,#167,Oct2006).
