1675 “Before Charles Calvert, came Adam Shipley of Anne Arundel Co. Maryland, and proved his right to Eoden du fifty (50) acres for his time of service performed in the Province. Warrant then granted to Adam Shipley for fifty acres of land due him as above.”

THE FIRST, on Elk Ridge (near Columbia) Marker dedicated 1987 to commemorate
the 300th anniversary of the first large land grant in what is now Howard County.

Gist, Carroll County MD. Organized by ◦ Robert H.H. Shipley, farmer, school board member, postal employee ◦ Ulysses Hayes Shipley, farmer and school teacher who perceived
the desirability of pursuing ties of kinship beyond local boundaries ◦ Larkin Amos Shipley, historian and lawyer noted for his absorption
in genealogy and historical facts
Heavy rain curtailed attendance to about 125 Meeting began with a devotional service followed by lunch,
talks about family origins, and a musical program So enjoyable and informative decided on yearly gatherings

but related families included ◦ Barnes, Bennett, Conaway, Creswell, Davis,

"Excelsior" was adopted as motto (ever upward)
Green and gold were chosen as colors Four-leaf clover chosen as official flower
