How does God want us to use his name?

The Second Commandment

• How could we summarize this commandment?– Love for God's name

What is God's name?

• LORD, Jesus, Holy Spirit …?

• Everything God has revealed about himself in his Word.

What God’s People Don’t Want to Do

• Exodus 20:7 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

What does God want us to avoid?

• Use God’s name in vain– Carelessly– Needlessly– For an evil purpose

• Misusing God's name– "Oh my God!"– "Oh my gosh!“

The Third Commandment

How does God want us to honor his Word?

What does God require?

• That we set apart time for him, his Word, and worshiping him.

Why?

• Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Why?

1. To have rest from our sins.

• John 8:47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.

• Psalm 122:1 I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”

2. To GLADLY hear and learn his Word.

• Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

2. To GLADLY hear and learn his Word.

3. To get together with fellow believers.

• Psalm 100:2-3 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
