Council Connections Your Congregation Council met on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 7:00 pm.
The Council received and approved the report and recommendations from the Strategic Planning Team. Cathy Frost, chair of the Team, attended the meeting to explain the development of the report/recommendations and to answer questions. This Team was formed in January 2015 to consider the future of St. Luke in light of trends that are occurring within southeastern Connecticut, the New England Synod and nationwide.
After a great deal of study and discernment, the Team recommended that St. Luke seek designation as a “Reconciling in Christ” (RIC) church by studying the material in “Building an Inclusive Church: a welcoming toolkit”, by appointing an individual to begin the process of listening to members and building a group to lead St. Luke through the steps outlined in the “toolkit”, and by bringing this initiative forward to the congregation. The Council will be discussing these recommendations in the months to come and you will be hearing more about this initiative as the discussion continues. Although the designation RIC applies to the acceptance of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer (LGBTQ) people, St. Luke hopes to

Thank you for your warm welcome, people of St. Luke! My first few weeks I’ve been meeting people, learning about your current ministries, and getting into the rhythm of a Sunday with two, sometimes three, worship services. This congregation is big and full of life, so there is a ton to learn.
As I learn, I really want to hear from you: each of you reading this newsletter, each person in worship on Sunday, and even people in the larger community. What are your hopes and dreams for St.
Luke? How can we help meet the spiritual needs of busy families when getting to church on Sunday morning isn’t a possibility? What channels of

A Note from Pastor Sarah
Thirty-one Days of Prayer If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
This past few years have been hurtful
ones. I feel like the people of the world
are reaching the point of irreconcilable
differences. There doesn’t seem to be any
indication that people want to reconcile
differences. The ideals that are being
presented by reasonable people is that
there are only winners and losers.
As I taught the second lesson of Faith
and Politics to the Men’s Bible Study, the
individual I used from Hebrew Scriptures
was Cyrus the Great. He was a total pagan
according to Jewish law and faith, yet he
was the choice of God to be the king of the
world a title that Cyrus claimed and wore
proudly. “Thus says King Cyrus of Persia:
The Lord, the God of heaven has given me
all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has
charged me to build him a house at
Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Any of those
among you who are of his people – may
their God be with them! – are now
permitted to go up to Jerusalem in Judah,
and rebuild the house of the Lord, the God
of Israel – he is the God who is in
Jerusalem” (Ezra 1:2-3). Cyrus did win
but he treated those he conquered with
dignity and human kindness. One of the
written statements of Cyrus says,
“Success should always call for showing
greater kindness, generosity, and justice;
only people lost in the darkness treat it as
an occasion for greater greed.”
This is a time that I believe that we as
the Church need to pray for the spiritual
health of our country and of the world.
But let’s start with our country which
seems to become more divided and
distrustful of those who are different than
at any other time in our short history. I
recently received a package in the mail
from Spire Resources entitled PRAY31. Of
course there is a booklet that goes with to
help us pray but I believe using the idea
and praying for our country each day of
October will effect changes not only
within each of us but within our country.
I ask that each person pray for all the
leaders of our nation, whether you voted
for them or not. Pray that their hearts
would be guided by God and that their
decisions would be wise and that their
leadership would be guided principle.
Pray for our justice system, our judges,
magistrates, police officers, prosecutors,
defenders. Pray for our Armed forces; for
their unselfish service; their dedication to
defend against all enemies. Ask God to
bless them, protect them and give them
strength. Pray for all first responders for
their unselfish service and their
dedication to protect and save our
citizens and their property. Pray that God
to protect them and to give them strength.
Please pray for each state, two states a
day. Use an alphabetical listing and go
through the list. Pray for the leaders in
each state. Pray that their leadership
would be just, and that they act with
integrity and uphold moral standards.
Pray for all Churches, Synagogues,
Mosques, Temples and other religious
places of worship. Pray especially for
Christian churches to be the light that
Christ has called us to be to the world.
Pray that all Christians be motivated by
love, service and forgiveness and that all
Christians live by Christian standards of
conduct and be humbles servants of
Christ and positive influences in their
communities.
I’m not asking that you make this a
long drawn out prayer vigil. Just a simple
prayer for five minutes to begin your day
and five minutes to end your day before
you go to sleep.
I truly believe that prayer makes a
difference. God hears our prayers and
does transform lives. I believe that
through the prayers of the faithful,
division, anger and hatred will fade away.
Praying for the peace of God to
transform us day-by-day.
Pastor Danny
Church Library
Did you know that St. Luke has a church library? Books for both adults and children are shelved in the conference room. Congregation members may borrow books simply by signing them out in a notebook on the credenza! There are no call numbers to worry about – the books are organized in general subject areas for browsing. However, if you’d like to see what’s in the library, visit www.librarything.com/catalog/StLukeLuthLibrary for an online catalog. You’ll need to click on “All Collections” or one of the subject area choices in the upper left corner.
From the Lead Pastor
“I truly believe that prayer makes a difference. God hears our prayers and does transform lives. I believe that through the prayers of the faithful, division, anger, and hatred will fade away.”

apply the initiative to people of all racial, ethnic and religious diversities. The Council approved a few changes to the By-Laws to reflect changing the
name of the Discipleship Team to the Lifelong Learning Team. These changes will be presented to the congregation for approval at the Annual Congregation Meeting in January 2017.
The Council also approved changes to six Continuing Resolutions: Lifelong Learning Team; Financial Support Team; Director of Lifelong Learning; Youth Leader; Director of St. Luke Grins and Giggles Playschool; and Communications Coordinator. These changes do not Congregation approval, only Council.
Many thanks to Michele Clements, Mili Derjue, Janis Vajdos, Liese Zitzkat, Katie Johnson, Carter Smith, Justin Aleshire, Mike Johnson, Louise Black, Mary Baudro, Larry Wolfgang, Felix Vajdos, Veronica Rollinson, Noelle Hale, and Leslie Wood for volunteering to staff Sunday school this year.
Grins and Giggles is full (ten children)! And, three children are on the waiting list. The lifelong Learning Team is discussing expanding Grins and Giggles to five mornings/week and then to all day in the next few years.
By the time you read this, another successful Meal Assembly Event will have taken place, with at least 40,000 meals packaged. Many thanks to Bill Kracke for his leadership of this event.
Treasurer Leah Lozier reports that year-to-date income through August slightly exceeded year-to-date expenditures. This is good news as summer income is often affected by members’ vacations and travel.
Leah is also compiling the requests from the various Teams and staff to begin developing the St. Luke operating budget and capital improvement requests for 2017. You will be hearing more on this subject in the coming month.
FYI. At the Special Congregation Meeting held in August, the names of a few members were not on the list of those eligible to vote. To be eligible to vote at a Congregation Meeting, a member must be confirmed (which a member is assumed to be), must have communed within the past twelve months of that Meeting, and must have contributed to St. Luke within the past twelve months of that Meeting. (In the past, a contribution was assumed to be a financial contribution but the ELCA has now defined that a contribution may also be of time and/or talent.)
Kathleen Bartkowski and Laurie Crawford are reviewing the St. Luke membership database to resolve any database issues. However, it is incumbent upon each member to complete the yellow Connections insert, found in the weekly worship folder, at least once per year indicating that the member has communed at a service. Additionally, if a member only contributes loose cash, that member should place the cash in an envelope listing the member’s name at least once per year. If the contribution is time and/or talent, the member should make that contribution known to a Pastor or the Parish Administrator.

A Life Saving Gift
Fall brings a time to share the gift
of life, by giving blood, at our Red
Cross Blood Drive on Thursday
October 13th. This special gift may
turn out to be life-saving for a family
member, friend, neighbor or even a
complete stranger.
According to the Red Cross,
every two seconds someone in the
U.S. needs blood and more that
44,000 blood donations are needed
every single day. The need is
constant and the contributions are
essential in order to maintain a
healthy and plentiful blood supply.
As the holidays approach, the need
is greater than usual.
The Red Cross tells us the number
one reason people give for becoming a
blood donor is, “I want to help people.”
There are three easy ways to sign up to
become a donor. 1) Sign up at the
Blood Drive table in the narthex
following our worship services on
Sept. 25, Oct. 2, and Oct. 9. 2) Make an
appointment by calling 1-800-RED
CROSS or 3) Sign-up online at
www.redcross.org. If you can’t
donate blood, volunteers are always
needed to prepare refreshments or
staff the blood drive. St. Luke blood
drives are well known for providing
delicious homemade baked goods and
a reason that many donors prefer to
donate here. You will find the
volunteer sign-up list at the Blood
Drive table in the narthex, along
with information about giving blood.
Won’t you spare an hour or two of
your time and join us in making a
meaningful life-saving difference in the
community? We look forward to
seeing you at our upcoming Blood
Drive on Thursday October 9th from
1:30 - 6:30 p.m.

28th Crop Hunger Walk
Our community CROP
Walk will be held on Sunday
October 16, 2016 at 1:00
p.m. Save the date and plan
to join in the fun by
participating as walkers and/
or donors. There are two
routes to accommodate
varying levels of ability: a
short one mile walk on level
ground, through Gales Ferry,
and a four mile route on
varying terrain.
The planning committee
hopes to increase walker
participation by 10% and
raise approximately 25%
more in beneficial funding for
life changing projects.
Please stop by the CROP
Walk displays in the Narthex
to pick up a walker packet,
learn more, or sponsor a
walker. Walkers are
encouraged to register online
early as a way to spread the
word among potential donors.
Clothing items with CROP
Walk logos are being offered
as incentives for walkers
who obtain $150.00 of
support before Saturday

“Singing in a choir is an absolutely unique experience. It is one of the most important things in the world. Where else do you have everyone doing the same thing at the same time without the use of special equipment and for a greater purpose, and no one is sitting on the bench?”
- Ian Loeppky
On October 23 at 9:45 in the Music
Room I will be having a meeting
with those interested in
brainstorming how to service our
community through the use of St.
Luke Music. The “typical” method is
to take a choir/bells to a nursing
home. I don’t want to go “typical”. While that is all well and good, I believe there are
other ways to serve our community through music. You do not need to be part of the
music program to give us your ideas!
Senior Choir—We welcome our
newest member, “Mitch” Mitchell,
bass; and returning soprano, Lillie
Kuhn for a grand total of 21 singers.
There are nine robes left to be
filled!!!!!
Celebrate Team—We welcome back
Lillie Kuhn this year. If you are
interested in joining us, please feel
welcome to do so!
Children’s Choir—Leslie Woods is
leading the opening of Sunday
School Music enabling all children to
be part of the Children’s Choir.
We are up and ringing. Losing three
ringers from last year, but gaining 7
new/returning ringers, our total
number of ringers is 49. Let us
welcome them!

Healing Ministry
On the first Sunday of each
month, Healing Services are
offered at both of the ser-
vices. After communing,
parishioners may go to the
area beside the altar where
healing ministers are availa-
ble for anointing and per-
sonal prayers. Everyone is
invited and encouraged to
take advantage of this spe-
cial healing service.
