THE
MEMBERS MARK FOUNDER’S PASSING AND CELEBRATE HER LIFE
Like many of us, I was saddened to hear of Rozanne 's death . I cannot express how grateful I am to her for starting OA--the same year I was born, which I have always felt is a nice coincidence. I also was lucky enough to have sat in the same meeting as she did for a short while. This was ten or more years ago, but I can still remember the city near Los Angeles where the meeting took place. I did not realize until talking to s o m e o n e e l s e a f t e r t h e m e e t i n g that the person named Rozanne who had shared (not qualified) was indeed "that Rozanne". She certainly did not put on any airs or act like she was more special than anyone else in the room. At this point I was in relapse and at my heaviest weight (90 pounds more than I weigh now), and it was very important to me that she did not look like she had ever been anything but thin. I saw her again at that meeting and listened
closely when she did share. I imagine I was not the only one doing so, and that must have been an interesting position--for if we knew who she was, she was truly not Anonymous. I remember that she seemed kind and down to earth in her shares. She might not have looked like she had ever suffered with this eating disease, but she certainly sounded like recovery to me. It would be nice to round off the story by saying I surely and steadily rediscovered my recovery in Southern California. But, much as was the case to some degree with Rozanne, relapse was part of my journey. All these years later, I am -- one second at a time – finally back in recovery. And I know it truly would not be so, but for this humble woman who took that first step in 1960 and kept coming back no matter what. Anonymous
WSO OA NEWS BULLETIN
We are deeply saddened to report that OA's beloved founder, Rozanne S., passed away peacefully last night, January 16.
Rozanne began Overeaters Anonymous in California on January 19, 1960, and fulfilled her dream that it become an international organization. We are forever grateful to her for her vision, perseverance, and love, through which so many have found recovery from compulsive eating. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Cards may be sent in care of the World Service Office. (P.O. Box 44020, Rio Rancho, NM 87174-4020) Rozanne's family has requested that donations in memory of Rozanne be given to OA instead of flowers and the like. http://www.oa.org/pdfs/Rozanne%20Tribute.pdf

At my very first World Service Business Conference, I was a volunteer, and I was asked to assist Rozanne, who was in attendance and sitting in the visitor’s section in the back. She was under the weather, and I was glad to be able to do service for someone who had done so much for OA. She was called the “co-founder” when her book (Beyond Our Wildest Dreams) came out…. Though she was the sole initiator of the idea of the fellowship – to be modeled after AA, she was assisted by a fellow from GA (Gamblers) – and others. They were called the co-founders, but the others have renounced that title: One because she shortly thereafter left the program. The other was one of the earliest members, but did not consider herself a founder. Later, in 1996, we met again at the World Service Convention in Manhattan, which was a beautiful setting to spend time with her. Beyond Our Wildest Dreams had just come out, and she was signing copies for us all – Of course, I still have mine. She was a visionary and, at the same time, a real person.
Her home WAS OA for a long time – all of the correspondence, all of the literature – anything to do with OA came out of her residence. G-d knows her family must have been very supportive She was not an immediate fan of the 12 steps, and actually tried to change them to downplay (or eliminate) critical spiritual elements. That was short lived and she soon embraced the steps the way they were originally written. Rozanne experienced relapse during her time in OA, and when she came back she showed many people that “keep coming back” was not an empty platitude. She was a real champion of maintaining physical abstinence and living with integrity (personal respons ib i l i ty ) where our food was concerned. She felt that unless we were at a healthy body weight, OA was never going to have the credibility that it needed to be truly attractive. She will be missed Neil
In 1990 when the OA convention was in Baltimore, it was my 1st year in OA. My sponsor worked in Baltimore and gave me a ride to the city from Annapolis. One of the workshops was for people 60 and over. Since I had turned 60 in August 1990. I decided that I was supposed to attend that meeting. Rozanne attended also. She shared that it was difficult to remain abstinent as she was aging. I was impressed that her share was timed just like everyone else.
After the meeting I talked to her. I think that I shared a story about Bill Wilson being upset that he was not recognized as the founder of AA at a meeting in California. She said that she had never met him, but had met Lois Wilson, his wife.(Rozanne would have been 61 that year.)

FOUNDER, cont’d
Keep your recovery first to make it last.
3
I recently had the privilege of attending the BAIG Intergroup 37th Anniversary Celebration on November 17, 2013, where I attended the workshop on Steps 1, 2, and 3. After three speakers respectively presented on each of the initial steps, we were asked to form three smaller groups to talk about what was important about one of these steps.
The group on Step 1 discussed the following:
• Step One reminds us it is important to put 150% into our program work.
• Step One reminds us we have to surrender.
• Step One is about “whatever it takes to get out of there.”
• Step One primes us to apply our trust in a Higher Power to become food wise. We surrender to our powerless to invite HP into our lives.
• There are two parts to Step One: (i) Powerlessness over food; and (ii) My life is unmanageable. This is about how eating foods makes my life crazy. I need to take the full step, not just a little bit. My life is
unmanageable because I cannot control food.
• Step One is about acceptance that I am powerless over food. I knew before I came here I had a food problem and it caused a lot of difficulties. I need to accept I have this problem and then I can go onto the other steps.
• Step One is about pain.
• It is “Step” One of Twelve Steps which means I need to work the eleven other steps as well to seek a new type of solution, a spiritual solution.
• Step One reminds me I need to be aware of my mental obsession to ever get clean.
• Unless I decide I am powerless in a big way, I may think I can handle it my own way. This means I may not do it all, but think I can decide how to deal with the problem. I must not just say I am powerless, but really mean it. It is my responsibility to partake in all the program has to offer.
KAJ
NOTES FROM THE BAIG 37TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Thoughts on Step 2:
I heard a member share about needing facts to back up a belief in a Higher Power so she looked at her past and saw how something had gotten her through life’s threatening situations. She then realized that her Higher Power had her back the entire time. The difference is that now she gives HP the credit. I was
able to share how I surrender my will and life by writing my daily plans in pencil and giving HP the eraser. Another member shared to just do the action and the feelings will follow. Act as if you believe in a power greater than yourself. You can choose a HP that works for you.! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! ! Susie

1. Have I made a list of all the ways I eat compulsively, and developed a food plan to address portion-control, eating behaviors, and trigger foods that cause me problems?2. Does my plan of eating address eating at home, in restaurants, when I travel or attend events? Does it specify appropriate times to wait between meals?3. Is my food plan designed to take me to a realistic, healthy goal weight? 4. If I use a nutritionist, does s/he know about OA, and what abstinence is all about? 5. Am I fully committed to being abstinent each and every day? (e.g. Completely refraining from binge, trigger or addictive foods?)6. Have I taken suggestions from my sponsor to help define a food plan, or do I believe it’s my job to tell him/her what I “intend” to eat?7. Am I willing to write my food down in the morning and commit to sticking with it?8. Am I accountable to a sponsor to report my struggles and my successes?9. Do I use eating out as a reward, or to “get a hit” in any way? 10. Do I eat differently when I eat out or travel from how I eat at home? 11. Am I consistently moving towards a healthy weight? How much weight would I need to gain before I’d have to admit that I’m still overeating?
12. Do I adjust my food plan based on my current individual needs? (Age, level of physical activity, health risk factors)13. If I’m underweight, am I eating enough food, including foods that are not low or non-fat, in order to address my food-fears and distorted body image?14. As a bulimic, does my plan of eating involve not only refraining from purging but also maintaining a healthy body weight? 15. Is my food plan designed to improve existing health issues or help prevent them? (e.g. Diabetes, Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, ADD, Poor sleeping habits, etc.) 16. Do I overuse spices and other flavor enhancers? (e.g. salt or artificial sweeteners) Do I defend using these things because I “deserve” to enjoy my food, and “am not going to let OA cramp my style”?17. Do I keep food secrets that make me feel like I’m back-sliding or “cheating”?18. Do I eat while preparing or cleaning up after meals? 19. Do I still shovel food into my mouth, eat off other peoples’ plates, or break open food packages in the supermarket or on the way home and still consider myself abstinent? 20. Can I effectively sponsor others when my own food is not in order?
OA is a program of honesty, action, integrity and most importantly, attraction.
An alcoholic who drinks periodically is considered an active alcoholic.
What is a food addict who eats compulsively with any degree of regularity?
This literature has been locally produced, reflecting the experience, strength and hope of our local members. It is not OA Conference/Board approved and does not represent OA as a whole.
Questions Worth Asking About My Plan of Eating
When we feel under pressure and fear that there will not be enough time to do the things we think we need to do, it helps to stop for a moment and remember that all time is God’s. We may be wanting to do more than we should in the same way that we wanted to eat more than we needed. Exchanging compulsive overeating for compulsive activity is no solution to our problem. Turning over our lives to our Higher Power as we begin each day allows Him to schedule what we will do and when we will do
it. HP knows our capabilities even better than we do, and does not give us more to do than we can manage. To benefit from HP’s guidance, we need to stay in touch with our inner selves and not get swept away by external demands. In the past, we may have alternated between periods of non-productive lassitude and frantic bursts of activity. As we maintain ourselves on an even keel physically by abstaining from compulsive overeating, we learn moderation and order as HP shows us how to use the time we are given.

Steps I woke up and thought what a wonderful day,I no longer felt lost, I had found my way. There were people who understood why I ate like I did,I found I wasn't crazy, the only one who hid. For years I had fought, trying each new diet that came,The effort was there yet the results were the same.I berated myself for being so weak,My health suffered, my future seemed bleak. I didn't know I had a disease, that I couldn't win,Without help from a Higher Power to give me strength within. When all else seemed lost I came into OA,They gave me hope, twelve steps to follow each day. I go to meetings, I write, I read,I do what they tell me, I do what I need.I pray and I meditate, I take care of me,I'm living my life, joyous and free. Linda R.
