• EVs and other New Energy power sources are a global trend within the automotive world.

• Next five years will see a dramatic change in the types of vehicles available.

• Telematics will have a big role to play in this change. Two functions ~

Support consumers to reduce “range anxiety”

Support VMs in monitoring performance of new vehicles

9

Supporting consumers

• Telematics services are being developed to reduce worries over EV range by providing ~

Information on location of charging points

Allowing drivers to book charging periods or exchange batteries

10

Supporting vehicle manufacturers

•As EVs are new technology, vehicle manufacturers want to closely monitor ~

The performance of their vehiclesHow consumers are using the vehicles

• Telematics will let them do this. It will allow fast identification of any reliability issues and hence design improvements. It will also allow them to understand the needs and responses of consumers to their EVs.

• Vehicle manufacturers are investigating two main approaches to providing telematics services for EVs ~

Over-the-air based on cellular telecommunications (‘traditional’ telematics)

Plug-in based on using the electricity “smart grid” (new concept)

What options do vehicle manufacturers have?

13

Over-the-air telematics

• Using traditional telematics architecture of GPS location and cellular communications (e.g. OnStar, G-Book, StarWings etc).

•Particularly suited to ~

locating charging points and guiding the driver to them

Remote diagnostics

What options do vehicle manufacturers have?

14

Over-the-air telematics

• Over-the-air EV telematics services already under development include:

Nissan ~ modifying Carwings in Japan for EV-related services

GM ~ OnStar phone app for VoltRenault ~ Better Place partnershipBMW Mini EPeugeot iOn ~ EV version of Peugeot Connect

services. VW – E-upDaimler – partner with RWE

What options do vehicle manufacturers have?

15

Plans for over-the air EV telematics

What options do vehicle manufacturers have?

16

Plug-in telematics

• Based on sending data over the smart-grid while charging the vehicle battery.

• Particularly suited for ~

Delivering data-heavy services such as downloading entertainment files from a home network

Optimising charging and billing

What options do vehicle manufacturers have?

17

Over-the-air vs plug-in telematics

What options do vehicle manufacturers have?

18

• SBD believes that most vehicle manufacturers will use a combination of both over-the-air and plug-in telematics according to the particular service offered.

It will not be an either/or decision. Rather a combination according to the services offered and the needs of the consumer and VM.

What options do vehicle manufacturers have?

Conclusions

20

Key issues

• Establishing close relationships between vehicle manufacturers and the multiple charging station operators and electricity companies.

Billing and payment processesStandardisation of EV charging equipment

and payment technology ~ avoiding incompatibility problems

Which are the unresolved issues that need further research?

21

Billing and payment

• VMs need to think about how the consumer will experience the billing and payment processes.

• It is not yet finalised how charges will be collected and distributed between the different players in the value chain.

Which are the unresolved issues that need further research?

22

Standardisation of charging technology

• Multiple charging point operators, vehicle manufacturers, and electricity generating/delivery companies = recipe for incompatibility problems.

• Agreement on technical and procedural standards and their uptake is needed. Particularly important somewhere like Europe with 30 different countries. In Germany BMW and Daimler are working together with electricity companies. But this is ust one country..

• But this is out of the hands of the VMs. So cooperation is needed with electricity companies.

Which are the unresolved issues that need further research?

23

Cooperation between automotive and electricity industries

• To facilitate the use of the smart-grid for two-way communications, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is needed. Cooperation is already underway ~

Daimler and RWE e-mobility JV in Germany Ford and GM are both pushing USA

electricity companies for AMI Nissan and GE in USA Mitsubishi and JDS i-Charger AMI

programme

• New Energy Vehicles are key to the future of private automotive industry in China. This is due to two key issues:

Environment/pollution concernsOil reserves are limited in China so government is looking for

alternatives

• The government is encouraging EVs through financial incentives.

• EVs seen as a key area for China to gain a global technological lead for its automotive industry.

What is the situation in China?

26

• Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is mandating the monitoring of the performance of New Energy Vehicles.

• This is an excellent opportunity for vehicle manufacturers to use telematics for the MIIT monitoring and also:

Gain experience of providing telematics services.Piggyback other services in addition to remote

diagnostics functions.

What is the situation in China?

27

• MIIT is requiring performance monitoring of New Energy vehicles as they reach the marketplace.

29

• EVs are here and growing fast

• Big role for telematics to help both consumers and vehicle manufacturers

• Those VMs already offering telematics are modifying their services while others are developing EV-specific services

• VMs will combine two telematics delivery methods (over-the-air and plug-in)

• Many different solutions are under development by VMs

• Many unresolved issues are based around billing and charging compatibility

• China will be a key player with political backing for EVs and an opportunity for industrial competitive advantage
