Three Types of Rocks

Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary

Igneous Rocks

Igneous rocks form when molten (Magma) rock cools and becomes solid.

Igneous rocks are divided into two groups, based on where the rock forms. Intrusive Igneous Rocks: Igneous rocks that form below

the Earth’s surface. They form when magma enters an underground chamber, cools very slowly, and forms rocks full of large crystals.

Extrusive Igneous Rocks: Igneous rocks that form above the Earth’s surface. These rocks, also called volcanic rocks, form when lava cools quickly at or above the Earth’s surface.

Sedimentary Rock

Formed from igneous rocks that are eroded by wind, water or ice

These sediments are carried into seas, after millions of years the weight of the sea and the sediments compressed into sedimentary rock

Metamorphic Rock

Metamorphic Rocks are formed when Sedimentary and Igneous rocks are exposed to heat and pressure

Metamorphism occurs when magma or liquids are forced into cracks of existing sedimentary and igneous rocks. The surrounding rocks are changed into metamorphic rocks
