The Right to Dream: Concerning the Film The Wind Rises Directed by Hayao Miyazaki
Junko Imamura
The production of animated cartoons demands exorbitant exertion and an endless
expense of time, like that of the workers described in Factory Journal by Simone Weil,
a French philosopher. And yet, the labour of the staff engaged in animated cartoons
embodies not a little the transformation from Nothing to Beauty, as Weil states that
“Labor needs Beauty and Poesie.”
In this article, as viewed from the perspective of “the right to dream,” we describe
how we are able to enjoy the beauty of the world and to create our own life in consid-
ering the film The Wind Rises directed by Hayao Miyazaki. In view of the fact that
many people who watched this film were impressed by the beauty of the original pic-
ture, its movement and its structure, we wish to describe the crossing-points of the
life of Jiro Horikoshi, the main character of the film, and that of Hayao Miyazaki, its
director.
