Strategic Alliance Group Announces December Orientation Meeting
Harvey’s CornerIt has been a long time since our
last RTA Members’ newsletter. Too long. But we are getting better every day and you can expect to see more streamlined and shorter RTA members’ newsletters in the future. This issue is very long because we are trying to accommodate our members who have asked us to include their news releases. If we omitted
something you had asked us to include we apologize and ask that you send it again for a future newsletter. We are aiming for our newsletters to be sent monthly beginning in 2012, and they will be shorter!
In the meantime, I want you to know that we appreciate your
patience and, if you are already an RTA member, we appreciate your support. Now on to a few things I want you to know.• I am fully back to work after my recent accident and shoulder
operation. It has been a long slog
and I’m thankful to all of you who sent get-well wishes. They helped speed my recovery. The lesson learned is NEVER READ ANYTHING WHILE WALKING. That’s what I did and I paid a high price, both in time lost and painful nights, because I was reading my mail while walking when I fell over a carton in my office. Bad idea!
• We recently received a letter from an attorney informing us that we could no longer use the tag line, “The Voice of Retreading Worldwide” on any RTA materials, because TRIB had copyrighted “The Voice of Retreading.” Rather than try to fight the issue, we agreed to stop using it but
explained that because of everything in the pipeline it would take us until the end of November to stop using it. The attorney agreed. (As an interesting and amusing aside, I originally coined the term “The Voice of Retreading” many years ago when I put out the very first TRIB newsletter. Such is life.)
Although you will no longer see “The Voice of Retreading Worldwide” printed on any new RTA materials after the end of this month, we’ll leave it up to you to determine who is really the “voice of retreading.”

the demands of the Tire Industry.
There is a real need for this support
within our industry.

HARVEY”S CORNER: continued from Page 1
• As we celebrate our first anniversary as an association, I sincerely thank each and every one of our members and friends who have supported us during our hectic first months. We were understaffed and underfunded, but we did it, and it never would have happened without
your help. Happily, we are getting more organized and stronger every day.
My pledge to you is to continue to promote the economic and environmental benefits of retreading and proper tire repairing worldwide, and to vigorously defend our industry against any unfair and inaccurate attacks
wherever in the world they might happen. And, we will come to your aid regardless of whether or not you are an RTA member.
In closing, do we hope you will join us? Sure we do, but whether you do or not, you can be certain we are here today and we are here to stay!
Thank you.

Products andServicesRTA MEMBER TIRE LYNA ASKED US TO POST THE FOLLOWING FROM MESILLA VALLEY TRANSPORTATION
Trailers Equipped With Tire Lyna Product - 10/04/11We at MVT have always gone the
extra mile to find ways to reduce cost
whether it is MPG or just cost per mile
on maintenance etc. About 2 years
ago we started looking at products to
eliminate flats and low air pressure
related problems. We had been using
PSI system for 6 years and as good as
it is it also creates a lot of flats.
We have run wide base tires on truck
and trailer since 2003 and as you
know, no matter what kind of tire, the
down time from flats can just about kill
you or make your customer want to do
it for you. We tried three different types
of flat prevention liquids and wound up
using Tire Lyna. We find that this
product keeps the air where we set it
and also balances and protects the
cords if a nail or other object
penetrates and tries to destroy our
precious casings.
The return on investment is amazing
on straight cost and almost impossible
to measure when you consider
customer satisfaction or lack of plant
shut down on JIT deliveries because
we just don’t have as many blow outs
or flats causing costly delays.
Our drivers and OO.s can drive with a
sense of relief knowing that if they hit a
nail or bolt in the road they can ‘keep
on trucking” as Tire Lyna will repair the
hole as they drive and need no other
maintenance.
Just another of the many secrets that
we at MVT are using to “kick your
asses”…..
They have any different ways to help
you get started if you are one of the
many fleets that are scared to spend
money on your future existence..
Good luck…
FYI: This is the list of Trailers that
have been Equipped with Tire Lyna
product (Tire Sealant). In reviewing the
attachment you will find that as of
today, we have 2,126 Trailers
Equipped with Tire Lyna product. We
will be sending a list as we perform
installations..
Note:

Shell ROTELLA®
Energized Protection
By Dorothy CoxTHE TRUCKER STAFF
Your truck tires may be better prepared for the next life than you are. Seriously.
New tires today are all produced for mul-tiple lives, said Harvey Brodsky. “You rarely see a tire ad without it talking about retread-ability.”
Granted, Brodsky might have an axe to grind as managing director of the Retread Tire Association.
But he also has years and years of knowl-edge about rubber and retread technology un-der his belt. And in his passion to educate driv-ers about the quality of good retreads, Brodsky has “talked to more truckers than most people on the planet,” mostly through his on-air time for Landline Now, the Open Road Café and Midnight Trucking Radio, he said.
“Today’s retreads by top-quality retread-ers have failure rates lower than tier-one new tires,” he noted.
How can that be? When a new tire comes out of the factory, Brodsky said, it’s only after 200,000 miles that anyone can know if it “can really hold air.”
retread factory goes through a detailed inspec-tion and they know it’s “suitable for its next life,” he explained.
However, a perfect storm of events has pro-duced a tire casing shortage, meaning retread-ers are scrambling to get their hands on good casings.
The reasons are multiple: The recession
the trucks they had sitting plus it took a toll on new truck tire sales. On top of that, Japan which for years had a bias against “anything used,” including retreads, now is fostering a ro-bust retread industry because of a concentrated education effort by Bridgestone there. That in
turn has dried up the large supply of good cas-ings that up until recently have come from Ja-pan, Brodsky said.
Why should truckers be concerned? For one thing, a good supply of retreads, which depend on good casings, keep the prices down on new tires since good retreads provide competition. For another, truckers now can get good money for casings and probably won’t have to look
Top-of-the-line casings that once fetched $70 can now be sold for $85 or more, accord-
1990s casings were selling for $90, but the dif-ference is that retreaders could get them then. Now, they’re just not available.
“All the [casing] suppliers we’ve dealt with for years are saying they can’t get any,” a major tire dealer told Tire Business.
The smartest thing to do, said Brodsky, is for truckers to get their tires retreaded. But if he or she doesn’t believe in retreads and wants to make some cash, that driver can sell the cas-ings.
The reason some truckers don’t believe in retreading, said Brodsky, is because they haven’t been educated on their quality, dura-bility and dependability, not to mention their cost- and energy-saving qualities since tires are made from petroleum-based products.

way a paper clip will if it’s bent back and forth
tires also put stress on tires and cause “gators,” Brodsky said, as does improper alignment.
And many truckers are familiar with the “limp on in” advice given out by dispatchers. Because time is money, the driver is encour-aged to get to the nearest truck stop or tire fa-cility and get a plug put in the tire or pick up the cheapest tire available, matching or not,
which means a blow-out on down the road. What makes the problem go away, Brodsky
said, are good tire monitoring systems that will alert the trucker before he or she has a problem — and of course education and more educa-tion.
“Tires love to suffer,” he’s fond of saying. “They’ll let you drive” no matter how bad
