Executive Director,

Presentation Partners in Housing

A Continuum of Services

PPiH provides a continuum of services to

support one of our communities most

vulnerable populations, those who are homeless or at-risk of becoming

homeless

Services Include:

July 2017 to June 2018 Financial Assistance:

PPiH provided financial assistance services in the form of:

• Rent/Mortgage

• Deposit

• Utilities

PPiH provided assistance to::

• 717 Households supported

• 818 Children in those households

• $761,425.00 Paid in Assistance

Housing Navigation abides by a Housing First Approach

Everyone is ready for housing is a basic human right and a necessary first step for people to make positive changes in their lives.

Choice is fundamental in empowering people to experience their own successes and learn from setbacks:

1.) To accept housing navigation services

2.) Where they want to live

3.) Their level of involvement in community based supports

Harm Reduction – People may be engaged in behaviors that are harmful to them. Housing Navigators use nonjudgmental conversation to explore less risky options people can choose when they are ready.

People can move towards their own definition of recoverythrough hope and the realization of possibility

When people are housed fewer community resources are spent on ambulance calls, emergency room visits, police involvement, incarceration and shelter stays.

Communities are vibrant, safer and more inclusive when

EVERYONE HAS A PLACE TO CALL HOME

What is Housing Stability

Having no problems with tenancy or lease agreement

01

Having a healthy relationship with landlord

02

Having a healthy relationship with neighbors

03

Paying rent in full and on time

04

Paying all other housing bills in full and on time

05

Maintaining the unit in good condition

06

Housing Navigation is a Marathon

Not a Sprint…………

Phases of Housing Stability

Housing Stability focuses on basic needs, safety and support

2-6 hours per week

01

03Self Management focuses on control and accountability

04Reframe/Rebuild focuses on identity, managing relationships and Independence

15-30 minutes a week

Jordan is in Phase 1 of Housing:

“The first few months after I moved into my place, I slept in a sleeping bag in my living room. Even though I had a bed, it

just didn’t feel right. I was so used to sleeping outside, in abandoned buildings, or sometimes on a friend’s couch. It was

weird to imagine sleeping in my own bed. Two years later, I sleep in my bed most of

the time. When I wake up, I sometimes start thinking right away about how I’m

going to survive the day…where I can get breakfast, how far I’ll have to walk, how to defend myself in fights on the street, stuff like that. When I look around and realize I’m in my own apartment and I

don’t have to spend 100% of my energy on just surviving day to day….I can’t even

describe how much better that feels.”

• Is in his 4th housing opportunity• In the process of applying for Social Security Disability• Just got a cat named Blue• Has had surgery on his neck and for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome• Is enjoying participating in our monthly art event

Dennis is in Phase 2 of Housing

Naomi is in Phase 3 of Housing

Naomi, 24

Living in a Shelter, homeless for 3 years

Recently given birth to a baby who was removed from her care

She was overcoming and addiction to Meth

Had committed a felony, spent time in jail and was released into homelessness.

For Naomi the barriers seemed too many to overcome, homelessness was tightening its grip.

With the help of her Housing Navigator, Naomi now has a place to call home.

• Because Naomi has a safe place to call home she was able to get her baby back. • Because Naomi has an address to call her own she was able to apply for and gain employment. • Because her life has become more stable her probation officer is released her from probation. • Because things are going so well with her baby Naomi is working on reunifying with her 2-year old son who has been in the care of family since he was seven months old.

In Naomi’s own words:

“They (PPiH) helped make sure we had everything we needed when we moved in, like a bed to sleep on and furniture to sit on.”

“You’re more motivated to stay on the right track when you have somebody in your corner cheering you on.”

“They (PPiH) helped get the stuff I needed for the baby.”

“Today the thing I enjoy the most is time at night where you know you can actually relax and know everything’s okay, you’re in your own place.”

BB is in Phase 4 of Housing:

“I am in control of my apartment. I’ve lived here almost 2 years. When I first moved in, I didn’t realize it was my home and I had a right to say who could be here and what they could do here. Now I’m in control, and my awareness is going to prevent me from ever being homeless again”

HOPE

I was lost and feeling blue walking the streets, what to do.

Homeless, Stranded, All Alone.

Having nothing, no place to call home.

Struggles, Addiction, Feeling Stuck.

Not a bad person, just down on luck.

When you came through with your awesome gift.

You gave me housing taught me to cope.

You made it better, you gave me HOPE.

What is next

In addition to the 3 Housing Navigators funded by the United Way of Cass-Clay, PPiH has hired 2 more

PPiH has partnered with Keen Property Management and the Fargo Housing and Re-Development Authority to offer housing vouchers to those living in our 220 building

∙The Fargo Housing and Re-Development Authority is offering preferences for housing vouchers to all those entering the Housing Navigation Program

∙PPiH is researching the use of Tiny Homes to house our communities most vulnerable (housing village or scattered site)

Moving Company

On May 26, 2015 the United Way of Cass-Clay (UWCC) Board of Trustees approved an investment towards the Housing Navigation Project. The United Way convened a Design Team of dedicated professionals with a wealth of experience and knowledge spanning nearly 200 years from multiple areas of homeless services. The aim of this project was to create a new culture of service delivery and increase collaboration and partnership among homeless service providers because we cannot continue to do the same thing in response to our homeless problem and expect a different result.

On October 26, 2015, the UWCC Community Investment Committee motioned to approve Presentation Partners in Housing (PPiH) as the employer of record for the Housing Navigation Project
