Wine & Architecture in South Tyrol

Many people immediately associate the word “pleasure” with eating

and drinking. In fact, pleasure encompasses much more than mere

culinary enjoyment: it includes any type of positive sensation that

can be perceived by the five senses. Wine and architecture are two

sources of pleasure that have always characterised South Tyrol’s

landscape and cultural identity in a very distinctive way.

Pleasure on the palate

South Tyrol is home to mineral, fresh and fruity white wines, such

as Weissburgunder and Sauvignon. In warm areas, fruity and elegant

red wines such as Blauburgunder and Vernatsch also thrive. The

dark-hued Lagrein and the aromatic Gewürztraminer are two indige-

nous wines. These wines are defined by the climatic interplay of hot

days and particularly cool nights.

Feast for the eyes

South Tyrol’s architecture is as varied as its cultural landscape.

Old country estates, castles and farms are just as typical of the

landscape as contemporary buildings and modern design. A lot has

happened on the South Tyrolean architectural scene, particularly in

the last ten years: thanks to keen enthusiasm about the local build-

ing culture and lifestyle, architects are creating structures that are

authentic to the region yet still fresh and innovative, whether the

project is brand new or a restoration. The architectural scene in

South Tyrol covers a wide array of structures: in addition to resi-

dential buildings, museums, and public buildings there are many

hotels, wine cellars and wine bars. Our map will guide you to

places that will be equally appreciated by wine enthusiasts and

architecture experts.

The Pleasures of South TyrolWine & Architecture with 33 featured points of interest

Hofstätter Wine EstateWine has been grown on the Upper and Lower Yngramhof in the village of Termeno/Tramin since the fourteenth century. Today, this former stage-coach inn is one of South Tyrol’s best-known wine estates. In the mid-1990s, Martin Foradori Hofstätter had an innovative wood-panelled wine tower built: designed by Walter Angonese, it now houses a light and airy tasting room on the first floor. The entire renovation project represents an excellent balance between function and aesthetics.

Nals-Margreid WineryTwo cultures meet in wine and architecture. They complement one ano-ther and, under ideal circumstances, enter into a long-term relationship. The Nals-Margreid Winery has trusted in this, supplying its high-quality wine with some excellent architecture. It’s a symbiosis rich in contrast that evinces its roots without losing sight of the future.

Via Heiligenberger, 2 | I-39010 Nalles/Nals | phone: +39 0471 678 626info@kellerei.it | www.kellerei.it

Tramin WineryTramin Winery has tradition, award-winning wines and, as of recently, a building that nestles into the landscape as if encasing the wine in under-stated armour.

San Michele-Appiano WineryRenovation work on these wine cellars was completed in time for cente-nary celebrations in 2006. Architect Walter Angonese and artist Manfred Alois Mayr designed the interiors of the cellars to reflect their winegrow-ing origins. The cellar’s unique character is enhanced by sophisticated lighting, room dividers and a focus on preserving the original structural elements. The list of award-winning wines is long; the best-known line is Sanct Valentin.

Pfitscher WineryWhen Pfitscher Winery was designing its new building, the goal was to create an appealing building while maintaining an environmentally friend-ly approach. The structure is South Tyrol’s first ClimateHouse-certified winery and, like Pfitscher wines, has a strong sense of individuality and character.

Muri-Gries Monastery CellarWinegrowing and monasteries have always gone hand in hand. This tenet applies at Muri-Gries as well: wine production has been a major focus here for several centuries. Today, the wine estate primarily produces red wine, the indigenous Lagrein grape variety being its main speciality. Dating back to the thirteenth century, the deep cellars hold old barrels and barriques while the stainless steel tanks and a fermentation cellar are housed in the old monastery church. This former castle has been home to Benedictine monks since 1845.

Piazza Gries, 21 | I-39100 Bolzano/Bozen | phone: +39 0471 282 287info@muri-gries.com | www.muri-gries.com

Katzenzungen CastleKatzenzungen Castle is home to the largest and oldest grapevine in Europe: it dates back 350 years and covers a surface area of 300 m². The castle itself is from the thirteenth century and makes an attractive back-drop for culinary and cultural events. Prissiano, 11 | I-39010 Tesimo/Tisens | phone: +39 0473 927 018info@castel.katzenzungen.com | www.castel.katzenzungen.com Trauttmansdorff CastleFirst mentioned in 1327, this castle overlooking Merano/Meran was rebuilt by Count Joseph von Trauttmansdorff and today forms the centrepiece for exquisite botanical gardens. The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are a wonderful fusion of historical and modern elements: the recently built visitor centre and KlimaHaus-certified administrative building are good examples. There is also a vineyard dedicated to preserving ancient autochthonous grape varieties of the region as well as the traditional pergola training system. Other wine-related attractions include the Tab-ernaculum, a walk-in treasure chest containing precious objects of wine history such as 2,400-year-old grape seeds discovered in South Tyrol, and the Gardens & Wine Experience Package. Via San Valentino, 51a | I-39012 Merano/Meran | phone: +39 0473 235 730 info@trauttmansdorff.it | www.trauttmansdorff.it

South Tyrolean Wine Museum & Wine Education TrailThis wine museum in Caldaro/Kaltern illustrates the history and impor-tance of winegrowing in South Tyrol through exhibits of tools and equip-ment used in the region throughout the centuries. Hundreds of years ago, the vaulted cellar was used to store wines. A wine education trail in front of the museum displays old vines and different grape varieties. Via dell’Oro, 1 | I-39052 Caldaro/Kaltern | phone: +39 0471 963 168museo-del-vino@museiprovinciali.it | www.museo-del-vino.it

Juval CastleCelebrated South Tyrolean mountaineer Reinhold Messner acquired the 700-year-old Juval Castle, located north of Merano, back in 1983. Today, he houses one of his MMM museums inside, exhibiting his Tibetan collection to the public here. Unterortl Winery, located halfway up the road to the castle, also belongs to the estate. The winery produces 25,000 bottles every year from vines grown right on the estate. Weekly guided tours of the cellars and vineyards are available. Merano’s Thermal BathsA natural oasis in the heart of Merano, this thermal bath is the design of a Berlin-based team of architects called Baumann Zillich. Matteo Thun de-signed the interior: here, he has created a natural and authentic South Ty-rolean feel thanks to his instinct for materials and colours. Spa treatments utilise local products almost exclusively: apple, honey and clay massages, grape-seed exfoliations and grape-oil baths are some of the highlights. Piazza Terme, 9 | I-39012 Merano/Meran | phone: +39 0473 252 000info@termemerano.it | www.termemerano.it

Lageder Wine EstateOrganic and ecological criteria were paramount when converting the winemaking building on the Löwengang estate. Designed by Bolzano-based architects Abram & Schnabl, this low-energy building is in perfect harmony with the existing historical residence. Im Paradeis Wine Bar, housed in an intimate courtyard, offers a unique blend of wonderful food, wine and art.

Vicolo dei Conti, 9 | I-39040 Magrè/Margreid | phone: +39 0471 809 500info@aloislageder.eu | www.aloislageder.eu

Manincor Wine EstateA cellar in the vineyard: this was the brainchild of Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg, successfully realised by the Angonese/Köberl/Boday team of architects. The result is a technically sophisticated cellar with a complex structure that has a minimal impact on the natural landscape. At the heart of the estate is the tasting room, which gazes out of the vineyard like a glass eye.

Novacella/Neustift Abbey WineryAlthough South Tyrol’s northernmost wine-growing region cultivates mostly green grapes, red wines also form part of the wide range offered by Novacella Abbey. The winery’s most popular wines are from the award-winning Praeposi-tus line. We highly recommend taking a tour through the Augustinian Canons Regular abbey in advance of enjoying a tasting in its cellars, where wine has been made for centuries. The tour includes the abbey’s light-flooded basilica in the Bavarian Baroque style, old library comprising a collection of 78,000 books, Pinakothek gallery, and museum.

Tiefenbrunner Wine Estate: Turmhof CastleWine has been grown at Turmhof Castle in the village of Niclara/Entiklar since Roman times. Herbert Tiefenbrunner and his son Christof still lovingly uphold this tradition today, producing first-class wines. The most celebrated of these is undoubtedly the Feldmarschall von Fenner Müller-Thurgau, which grows on Europe’s highest-elevation wine estate (more than 1,000 metres above sea level) and has already received several awards.

Via Castello, 4 | I-39040 Cortaccia/Kurtatsch | phone: +39 0471 880 122info@tiefenbrunner.com | www.tiefenbrunner.com

Kaltern Winery & Wine Center The main Kaltern Winery building dates to 1911, but it wasn’t until 2006 that the Vienna-based feld72 architectural group designed the new sec-tion. The modern building features brown concrete fibre panels and a bright glass façade in stark juxtaposition to the surroundings. Today, Kal-tern Winery has 410 members and a remarkable range of top wines.

Via Stazione, 7 | I-39052 Caldaro/Kaltern | phone: +39 0471 966 067info@winecenter.it | www.winecenter.it

Kränzel Wine EstateA medieval residence forms the core of Kränzel Wine Estate, which is cur-rently owned by Count Pfeil. Winegrowing enjoys a long tradition here, a fact that is documented by certificates of wine deliveries to Bavaria in the sixteenth century. Wines produced on the estate are available for tasting in the listed mill building. A labyrinth garden comprising a diverse world of plants rounds off the estate and is beloved by adults and children alike.

Schöneck RestaurantIn 1986, the Baumgartner family acquired Schöneck Restaurant, near the town of Brunico/Bruneck. It is said to be built atop the ruins of the birth-place of famous Gothic painter and sculptor Michael Pacher. The threeStuben (wood-panelled parlours), each of which has a traditional South Tyrolean oven, form the centrepiece of the building. The rustic wine cellar is adorned with pebbles and boasts more than 500 local and international labels.

Kallmünz RestaurantNot much has changed at Kallmünz Castle, located in Merano, since its construction in the fourteenth century. The complex comprises four sec-tions, one of which is the Stöckelgebäude, where grapes were once pressed for wine. The restaurant, a lovely fusion of old and new elements, was desi-gned by the current owner and offers an excellent wine list to complement its delicious food.

PretzhofOne family has managed Pretzhof, an estate located near the town of Vi-piteno/Sterzing, for more than 300 years. Pretzhof comprises a farmhouse, alpine pasture, and shop: the kitchen is thus well supplied with fresh pro-duce every day. Its Stube parlour is done in centuries-old larch and pine, and the food is based on traditional local recipes refined and reinterpreted by the chef. An extensive wine list reflects the owner’s great love for wine.

Bernardi Enoteque in BrunicoHere, Mother Nature is teacher, and a love of her is the driving force. Species-appropriate animal husbandry, natural preparation, a selection of producers and suppliers, and the absence of flavour enhancers: this is a promise of quality – and reason enough to stop by with a clear conscience.

Loving-ly managed by Markus Thaler and Patrick Pfitscher since 2006, the renow-ned Viennese architect Hermann Czech transformed this historical, listed building into an atmospheric bar offering 140 labels from winegrowers in Caldaro. Wassererhof FarmBuilt in the fourteenth century, Wassererhof Farm had been neglected for a very long time before the Mock family purchased it in 1996 and did a lovely restoration. South Tyrolean architect Sylvia Hafner Polzhofer combined the old building structure with new, modern elements to create apartments and a Buschenschank or country-style tavern serving traditional fare – usually washed down with South Tyrolean wine.

Pergola Residence HotelBolzano-born architect Matteo Thun’s design of the Pergola Residence Hotel, located in the village of Lagundo/Algund near Merano, represents a new chapter of the South Tyrolean lifestyle. Inspired by the surround-ing vine arbours and trellises covering the stone walls, the building is a timeless structure featuring stone and timber, an elegant interior with clean lines, long glass facades, and spacious vine-covered terraces. Seehotel Ambach HotelIn the early 1970s, South Tyrolean architect Othmar Barth drew up plans for the Seehotel Ambach, a lakeside hotel nestled amidst vineyards on the northern banks of Lake Caldaro. This exterior of the abstract, ge-ometric building is all in white; in fact, white also dominates the interior – with some wood accents. The structure is still widely regarded as one of the most outstanding hotel buildings in South Tyrol. Marinushof FarmMarinushof, in the village of Castelbello/Kastelbell, is a wonderful place for a farm holiday: this forward-thinking and modern farm has lost none of its original agricultural roots. Born in the Venosta/Vinschgau Valley, architect G. L. Debiasi designed the angular and contoured building using natural materials throughout. In addition to apples and apricots, grapes are cultivated and made into wine and distillates right on the farm.
