The Pirates of North Africa

How this political issue affected the  Articles of confederation.

pirates in north africa

• In 1776 pirates ruled the seas of north Africa. • Most countries made treaties for protection from the

pirates. • Others chose to fight the pirates.

 •  America was to poor and week to do either

• These pirates were savvy diplomat only fighting a few countries at once.

Who benefited and who was harmed by this?

Benefited: The pirates benefitedbecause in the end they still got their $1 million, and they still controlled the Mediterranean trade route.

Harmed:The Americans were harmed because because they didn't gain anything, instead they lost $1 million, and the right to trade along the Mediterranean sea.

How did your problem contribute to the growing dissatisfaction with the confederate system?

Our Problem contributed to the growing dissatisfaction with the confederate system by showing how ineffective the system was

at handling situations in which illegal payments had to be payed in exchange for

safety.

2. In what respect were the Articles of Confederation both EFFECTIVE and

INEFFECTIVE?

• The Articles of Confederation were both ineffective and effective in our

situation...• They were ineffective because  all the

states lost a very large sum of money because of the negotiations between

America and the Pirates.• But it was effective because it kept the

states unified against the problem and didn't allow any of the states to have

protection from the pirates by themselves.
