Overview• National non-profit organization formed in

2003 and dedicated to:– Empowering physicians to lead in the delivery of

high quality, cost-efficient health care – Strengthening the physician-patient relationship– Informing national healthcare policy by giving a

voice to physicians nationwide– Supporting practicing physicians as they work to

sustain their medical practices and navigate health reform

grant making, research, national surveys and policy studies– Awarded more than $37 million in grants– Conducted three nationwide surveys of

physicians– Supported 189 participants in the

Physician Leadership Academy since 2010

The State of Medicine Today• The Physicians Foundation 2014 Biennial Physician

Survey found:– A majority of physicians (56%) describe their feelings as

somewhat or very negative relative to the current state of the medical profession

– More than two-thirds (69%) of all physicians expressed concerns about clinical autonomy and ability to make best decisions for patients

– Twenty two percent of a physician’s time is spent on non-clinical paper work

Factors Impacting Physician Morale• High levels of government mandates / regulations• Malpractice liability pressures• Declining reimbursement• Sense of powerlessness to influence change• Uncertainty caused by health reform• Diminishing time spent with patients• Erosion of clinical autonomy• Lack of personal time due to ever present practice

demands

Managing Transition to ICD-10

• October 1, 2015 marked the transition to ICD-10• The Foundation’s Biennial Survey found:– 50 percent of physicians said ICD-10 would create

a severe administrative problem– 75 percent agreed that it will unnecessarily

complicate the coding process

• icd10charts.com is a collection of free ICD-10 resources to help with the implementation process, supported by funding from the Physicians Foundation

• The Physicians Foundation focuses on furthering physician leadership and physician-led innovation throughout the country

• Since 2005, the Foundation has awarded more than $7 million in grants focused on physicians leadership

The Physicians FoundationPhysician Leadership Academy• The Physician Leadership Academy provides medical

society leaders with the knowledge and skills essential to bridge advocacy and management and become skillful and effective leaders

• Since 2010, there have been 189 participants in the leadership academy

Brandeis Physician Leadership Conference

• In August 2015, the Foundation partnered with Brandeis University to facilitate a conference on building a physician leadership curriculum to empower physicians

• Conference brought together academics, practicing physicians and representatives from state and county medical societies

Brandeis Physician Leadership Conference• Conducted survey of 425 physicians across 12

states to uncover what physicians feel are the primary opportunities and challenges associated with physician leadership
